Alert | Does this phrase irk other people as much as it does me? Everytime I hear, or even see the phrase, it's as if someone is dragging fingernails down a chalkboard.
I guess perhaps I should get used to it. | | http://www.maricopabikeclub.com - Join us for a bicycle ride.

Alert | | It's better than calling it 'that ghetto in the desert'. | | Censorship is the tool of those who have the need to hide actualities from themselves and others. Their fear is only their inability to face what is real. Somewhere in their upbringing they were shielded against the total facts of our experience. They were only taught to look one way when many ways exist. Charles Bukowski

Alert | I'm with you Chimneyduck, it is irritating to me also! I mean Chris is short for Christopher, I get that. Sam is short for Samantha, I get that too. But The Copa isn't any shorter than Maricopa and it sounds kind of... ghetto-y

Well, technically it is three syllables instead of four syllables. If people reeeealllyyy want to save that one syllable, so be it.

Alert | It is just like calling SF "Frisco", could get you killed. Calling it the "CITY" is just fine. Me I like the "Copa". | | "What me worry"

"I live in Maricopa" "I live in the Copa"
You sure that the latter is shorter?
I hate it too. It sounds like a desperate attempt to make the city sound cool. | | Joined: Jul 2005

I think calling it a TOWN gives it a warm, cozy feeling. Calling it a city, well I dont think of this place as a CITY...we dont have any CITY things (A major shopping venue, movie theaters, Hospital etc. SO In my eyes calling it a CITY is worse, almost like a "lie" than calling it a TOWN, where you dont find those major city conviences. kwim????

We aren't trying to build a Town Hall. We are trying to build a City Hall. Don't we refer to vegtables running the "City" as the Town Council? They are referred to as the City Council.
If you think of Maricopa as a town...what big business will want to come here? The sooner we put the "Town" down... maybe a "City" will pop-up. I understand the "town" feeling but we need to call it what it is! A City!

To get around that, I've heard many people pronounce it dub-dub-dub. But can you imagine typing:
