Alert | oh good! I was waiting for someone else to take this thread in that direction, I didn't want to be the first.
To the OP: I'm sure your heart is in the right place, and good for you. BUT
Of course she has nothing! She's 16! Even if she had a job, that is certainly not adequate to raise a baby on! And if she has a job, she probably won't be soon. Why should we pitch in and help her?
Someone should have thrown some birth control, or better yet, some sex ed her way and told her to wait to have sex until she was old enough to handle the conseqences, should they arise (STD's, pregnancy, etc). Where are her parents? The ones that failed to do this important part of parenting? If they couldn't keep their kid from being irresponsible, they they need to head over to wal-mart/target/babies r us and pick up the baby essentials OR help this girl place her baby with a loving family who can provide for it. Let this girl finish school, make something of her life, instead of helping her and her baby sit on government assistance for many, many years to come.
Throw tomatos at me all you want. But this girl isn't getting a shred of help from me, or a few other posters I'm seeing. This does not constitute a "community rallying together to help one another" type of situation.

Alert | two things ...one, she could have been raped and depending on her religious affiliation, that may have taken away her ability to choose (especially the choice to have protected sex). ...secondly, I'm a father of 9 children and I take FULL responsibility for all of my kids. I have 8 from a previous marriage that I have full custody of and one with my current wife and I knew what the heck I was doing so I'm surprised not to hear you women chime in that the male involved in this creation of human life needs to get off his dead butt and handle his part of the responsibility. If we like to consider ourselves the "dominant" ones, guys we need to be the responsible ones first and foremost. Each and every one of us are capable of making something of ourselves and being responsible and though the girl may be at fault here, the guy is hardly an angel as I highly doubt HE was taken advantage of. | | Mr Durand

Alert | BLAH BLAH BLAH She's 16 and a kid herself and in no position to raise a kid. If she keeps this kid, then her kid will only repeat her mistakes. If she needs help with clothes and such, she is probably already on aid. So, I am supporting her with my tax dollars. Durandclan: congrats for DOING SOMETHING YOU ARE SUPPOSED TO DO. Gold star!

Kudos to you for taking care of your children! Like RichTig said, Gold star! And you are right, there is another piece of the puzzle: the baby's father. I agree 110% that he is responsible. Together, these kids (assuming it isn't someone over 18, and if it is, then the law needs to be involved) need to do what is right in the best interest of their creation and not rely on others to help them. I didn't mention him in my post, because the OP mentioned that the freecycle ad was about a 16 year old girl and there was no mention of a "couple" or the father. But Durand you are right, the baby's father needs to take responsibliltiy.

Alert | Beware of the scam artists on freecycle.
I am usually skeptical of people who don't ask for a specific item but will take anything that comes their way!
Those who are going to give her stuff better ask her to show up in person to pick it up. Don't leave it outside your door. This way you make sure that your stuff is going to a pregnant 16 yr old.
Finding your stuff at local Goodwill store.... the box you left on door for a pregnant 16 yr old...... priceless.
