Alert | This is a riot. This was the first time that we stayed in Maricopa for the 4th. We were in the Boy Scout tent, chopping veggies and serving hot dogs for the entire gathering at Pacana. When we sold out and packed up at the end of the evening, the fireworks were about to start. We sat as a family with some wonderful new friends and watched the show. This was the first time in three years, and I really mean it, that I felt anything positive about being a part of this community. The wind was so strong that we asked the boys to hold down the legs of the easy-ups. It kept blowing out the pilot on our grill. It was not to be taken lightly. As for the delay in the show, having seen fireworks in numerous cities in Phoenix Metro, not once has it ever started on time, and more than once the show was cancelled due to wind. Hell, there was lightning last night during the show and it still went on ! Thank you P & R for planning something very enjoyable. It's impossible to please everyone, so please don't sweat it. | | Poster formerly known as Sassafrass.

Alert | 37 republicans?
Drummer that is just plain wrong. You need to apologize.
Serioulsy my mother was burned 45% with 2nd and 3rd degree burns. It may have not been at a fireworks display. However, I would not wish that upon anybody.
You really need to examine yourself if you wish that kind of harm on people, no matter thier political affiliation. | | Vote NO on Prop 102

Alert | I don't understand how people can complain about something that didn't cost anything to attend in the first place. You can sit anywhere in town almost and see them. Were they as good as last years.........it's all in how you look at it. This year went longer. Even with all the winds they still went off. If you don't like it then don't watch. Some people are just never happy with anything. I feel sorry for them. | | Senior Member Posts: 4625 Joined: Feb 2006

Alert | Now for the funny irony.... Last year there was a thread here that was also very negative about the fireworks. People were really upset with the timing. The reason? The movie projector would not work so the fireworks started EARLY! LOL No matter what happens and no matter how good an event here is, SOMEONE will have a complaint!
The rantings for that went on for pages as well. Just makes ya think.... Happy 4th, everyone! | | Let X=X

Alert | I agree with twostep23. It was FREE, plus they provided FREE shutles back and forth. Considering the size, and budget of Maricopa, what more do you want? Fireworks were cancelled thoughout the countrty this year.... we were lucky to have anything at all. The only negitive thing I have to say.....It did start a bit late for my liking, and while it lasted a good lenth of time, this is geared toward the kids, and it would be nice to have them awake for the display.

Alert | I just had to add my two cents- I moved to Maricopa a few years ago from the Bay Area where I had lived my whole life. Did we have 4th of July celebrations? Of course. Do I think they were better than Maricopa's? Heck no! The celebrations in my home town consisted of parking that cost $5, admission to the park ranging between $3-$5 a person and any kind of children's activities were also at a extra cost. After spending a substantial amount of money for the family to eat play and be merry, we were treated to maybe 10 minutes of average fireworks at best. I am so proud and thankful to live in this town! The city events are awesome and my family really enjoys them. I just want to thank Marty and the rest of his staff for a great day! The Maricopa Parks and Rec. department is an asset to this city!

Alert | i had forgotten about last years salsa festival cancellation. that IS why we had such an awesome fireworks show last year. i think if from now on, they could start around 8:30pm b/c it is a family event, that would be really great. but, in the same regard, i realize they don't start if it's too windy, and i completely respect that b/c of the safety issue. i remember a time when i lived in chicago, and we paid a lot of money to rent a boat to go out and see the fireworks in the middle of the lake. two hours later, freezing and seasick, the fireworks started. i don't remember them being that great, at least not for what i paid for it anyway (i'm talking about the nausea, not the money.) anyway, that is one of the only july 4ths that REALLY stick in my mind. i guess it's the whole experience and what you choose to make of it. like i said, i was just happy sitting out last night, watching the fireworks and guessing what would come next. or maybe i was just really happy my children were sleeping and i had peace and quiet. either way, it was great | | this time i want a smart president!

Yea... I lived in He.... Umm.. Fremont for 6 years. Guess how many display we had in the entire city?
Zero, zip, none, nil, nada. My son's first firework display was when we went to Disneyland. The more people complain about the events here, the more the city may decide it is a waste of money to put them on in the first place. Of course that would open up a new thread. "Why don't we have anything in Maricopa on the fourth?" Again, though, if the fireworks rained gold down on the crowd, people would complain that the gold was too shiny. | | Let X=X

Alert | | I lived in San Jose, Ca. and while we had fireworks every year it was like traversing the landscape of a nightmare; still, honestly, there was something pleasurable in it, even so. When it was all over, no matter what we had been through, invariably I ended the night ready to feed my headache a few aspirins, but feeling quite satisfied.

Alert | Here's a suggestion for everyone - volunteer and help with the planning of the event! I bet lots of things could be added, changed and made better. But until you help out, until you share ideas, until you spend hours and hours and HOURS planning for every contingency... quit bitching.
As a kid in upstate NY, fireworks weren't until around 10PM. Why??? Because it wasn't DARK until then! The first year DH and I were married, we took my son to see fireworks at Westridge Mall in Phx. So-So fireworks and then three hours to get OUT of the parking lot when it was over. About 10 years ago at Harrahs, there was a very much advertised laser show and fireworks. At Farrell Road an accident required AirEvac to transport the injured. Because of the helicopters, the fireworks and laser show could not begin when advertised. Then because of FAA involvement and clearance, the show didn't begin until after MIDNIGHT. We were in the dirt lot behind the casino (pre-hotel days). We heard none of the announcements, had no water and couldn't get out because the roads were blocked by traffic.
My point - it's July in Arizona. Weather occurs just about daily. Something will happen. Kick back, relax and have a good time and make the best of it.
Remember the REAL reason we are celebrating... Happy Independence Day!!

Alert | Well put, Fritzydoodle. I usually find that those that complain the most do the least. Just an observation.
I have also found that in Maricopa there are a LOT of people that try to help others and set up events. I would love to know how many volunteers it took to help with the planning and execution of yesterday's event. I am sure it was quite high. To them I sincerely say, "Thank You"

Alert | let me start out by saying....this is a small town....and for a small town the display wasnt bad at all...that being said..according to the clock in my car the first one didnt go up until 9:47...and the wind was not anything worse then when we attended many shows as a kid in california or any here in AZ over the last 14 years and the lightning present was way north and south of us as well ...these things tend to be geared toward the younger people out there and even if it is on a friday night...its tough when you have little ones up until past 10:30...and the finale wasnt very good at all...but again...to end on a positive...at least we didnt have to drive to civilization to see fireworks...maybe next year they can push up other events such as movies...and get the fireworks going by 8:45 or 9:00 at the latest oh...and last years show was shorter...but did have a better finale...=) | | *formerly known as inyrfce2* Senior Member Posts: 797 Joined: Dec 2006

Alert | Interesting story on the Tempe event and equally more interesting are the associated user comments with people complaining about stuff.

Alert | Tortosaguy, I agree with your thoughts. Personally, I would like to not have a movie beforehand. I have a 7 year old and I do think a movie before is a fun idea, but does push the time back a bit much. There was a poll taken last year regarding the movie idea and many thought the movie was a good idea. I can't argue what the people want on something like that. My son, and other kids, opted not to watch the movie. They still had fun. They knew each other and they played together. That was a lot of fun to watch. Let's see if we can make a change on the schedule by helping plan next year's event.
With that said, though, this year the fireworks would have been late on an 8:30 schedule due to the weather.
Also, on a side note, the glowy and light oriented stuff that was being sold was really fun this year. They made a fortune on the down times. (Mostly from my wife) My son had a great time playing with, and sharing, all of these toys!

Alert | Apparently, there looks to me that there are more appreciative people here in Maricopa, than ingrates. I like that. It keeps the neighborly love flowin. I applaud Parks and Rec for EVERYTHING they've done for us (MARICOPA) this past year. It would be nice if we even have "Christmas in the Park" come winter (wink wink).

Alert | I realize some people make excuses for everything while others call it as it is. I call it as it is. The fireworks display was a major disappointment. By the way, I wouldn't call a town of estimated 33,923 residents "small". Maricopa is the same population as a typical "Chicago Suburb" <---- Drummer72, anyone can see a Chicago fireworks display on WGN, but that's a city of millions including thousands of businesses contributing to the city taxes so of course they would be better than Maricopa and it has nothing to do with their STATE Senator, moron---- I'm glad Maricopa has these events and again I emplore our city to put together more in the future.
To be clear for the slow or thick-headed, Corman, I am not apologizing or backing off from my statements. I started this discussion because of the lack-luster fireworks display and that is how I end it.

Alert | | I am pretty sure everyone got your point. You are allowed to have your opinion. However, it is clear by this thread that you are far outnumbered, and that the city does not need to apologize to anyone. You just can't please everyone. Oh well.

Alert | OK Griswold.......you have had your 15 minutes of "fame".....we all know how you feel and what you think.....
As stated before..........in every "bushell".....there is always ONE sour apple.....and you have designated yourself to be that ONE apple.......
It's time to "hug" and 'forgive"......and I forgive you for not wanting to apologize for anything. As you yourself said........you call it the way you see it, and that's fine. A "sour apple" can have an opinion too, and just like --------, everybody has one.
Surely you will forgive all of us, if we don't agree with yours.......after all, we give you credit for yours.
Have a nice day....... | | | |
