Alert | Griswold....
None of us started this attack.........but you are out numbered by people that enjoyed the show.
If it was so bad...why didn't you go home?
If you had done so, you wouldn't have been so disappointed by the "finale"
You don't have to prove to everyone what kind of person you are....."just sit at your keyboard and open your mouth"....proof is positive.
Try to have a nice day!!!

Alert | Just a note: At 9:00 last night the winds were around 30MPH. At 10:00 they were around 16MPH.
I doubt the fire department would have let them run with 30MPH. At least, I hope not. THAT is also my tax dollars at work.

It's truly entertaining that some people repeatedly point out that it was a "FREE" event so people should show some appreciation, or should not complain about being disappointed. Let me remind all of you....THIS EVENT WAS PAID FOR BY THE TAX-PAYERS!!!! Corman, I did not receive a "free lunch" nor did I ask for one. It speaks volumes about a person's character and lack of education when the first thing you want to do is generalize someone by saying they spent too much time in the beer garden. So because I did not care for the fireworks display I must have been intoxicated. Reality is this: The fireworks were a little more than what I use to set off as a kid growing up. I've seen better fireworks shows after a homerun at baseball games. I did not complain about anything other than the fireworks.
And for those meteorologists out there, the wind and "far off lightning" continued throughout the entire event. Lets remember fireworks displays are meant for our children so we should consider moving start times up to 8:30 or 8:45.
Oh, and to Marni....you should be ashamed for being a Democrat! Wow, I would love to see the fireworks you set off as a kid, then. We got to watch these fireworks from our backyard, and not only was the show the longest I've ever seen, but it was on par quality-wise with most other shows. Honestly I have less of a problem with my tax dollars paying for such a show than for some of the other programs my money funds. I was impressed. It's too bad you were not, but no one forced you to endure the entire thing.

Alert | I can understand the Op's frustration. It did have a late scheduled start, (9:30.) It started about 15 minutes later than that. I was anxious for the show to start, too. However, at 9:15 it was announced there may NOT be fireworks due to winds. The winds had picked up pretty good around 8:30. I'm glad it was done with safety in mind.
My family is out of town visiting family. So I went alone. I was already tired when I got there. Again, I can see how it would be with kiddos, too. It wasn't the same for me flying solo. I saw the great fun set up for kids in the parking lot, getting wet by the fireman. I saw the tournaments in the main softball field. Most of all, I could count on seeing many people that I know.
It wasn't the same without my family, but I did see other families being together. I liked seeing so many people I know there. Even though I went solo, I definitely wasn't alone. The show was long. I think my kids would have enjoyed seeing the display, even my impatient 3 yr old :o).
I walked a bit to my car, but I was home within a few minutes. THAT was a good feeling. I knew my home and rest WASN'T far away. All in all, I think it was good. I get to report to my family. This was the first time anyone of us went. So I think they'll have something to look forward to next year.
KUDOS to everyone who worked to put The Great American BBQ together. The execution was awesome given the amount of people and weather thrown in to top it off. It may have been a 4 1/2hour event. But, I know many more hours went into it before, during and AFTER.
Thank You. |

Alert | | I felt it took way to long to start. People with young children can not wait till almost 10:00pm to see fireworks. I was not able to see much of them because I had to get my baby home after waiting forever for them to start.

Alert | I thought overall the event was an excellent success and most enjoyable. I simply voiced my displeasure with the fireworks. It was a great opportunity for us to get out and enjoy our wonderful community. I think we should try to do it more often, especially when it is cooler outside. I'm sorry to hear so many people chose to stay home, isolated from fellow residents, but maybe next year you will join us. I don't want to take anything away from those who put the event together...I appreciate your time and effort.
Marni--- The fireworks show was mediocre at best, with long delays between individual shots and no grand finale which the children look forward to....but if you have below average standards, willing to accept sub-par performances, and are ok with wasting the taxpayer's money then vote for Obama and cross your fingers.

Alert | Whoa, I have to disagree wholeheartedly. Granted it was not something you would see at the National Mall, but figuring the size of the town it was a great show. It was also delayed because of safety concerns with weather, how dare they think of our safety.

Alert | Griswold.......I have to give you credit for attempting a recovery after you realize that no one else would jump on your "band wagon".
SAFETY.....caused the delay, because the fireworks people were committed to giving Maricopa a show, and they had to "hand ignite" each and every display, because of electrical charges in the atmosphere. You must have missed this information.....
When you attend church in the morning......mention this to God....he always listens to you!!
There were as many or more people outside of the park, enjoying the show also, and I know that they were thrilled, even with the "safety delay".
I know you tried, but you still owe the city an apology.....
Have a nice day.... | | | |

Alert | I'm glad so many people enjoyed the fireworks. I'm one of those lucky enough to watch from the comfort of my own backyard so I didn't attend the event and I had no idea there were any difficulties with hand lighting the display. I also dont know the rules about wind or climate when it comes to setting off a fireworks display. I do know however that it was scheduled to start at 9:30pm. It didn't.
My favorite part of any fireworks display is where I get to be overwhelmed with lots of simulataneous flashes and thundering booms, aka the Grand Finale. After the show, I waited and waited in anticipation for my single favorite part of the show. It never materialized. I walked into the house feeling rather disappointed that there was no grand finale. My wife and daughter enjoyed it the show, but I felt let down.
You can make all the excuses you want about the quality of the display for a town of this size you want. This is the NOT first time they've done a show. Am I looking a gift horse in the mouth? Perhaps, but our Mayor was quoted as saying "You do not have to go someplace else. It's all right here". Well Mr. Mayor, It wasn't all right here.
They should have it figured out by now. Make no mistake, sometimes that anticipation is as good as the show itself. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to check the weather and have contingency plans in place. I'm willing to bet that Phoenix and Tempe both had Grand Finale's.
I'm going to maintain my position and hold The City of Maricopa to a higher standard. Everyone else is welcome to make whatever excuses they want. Just remember, you'll always get out what you put in.
Overall, the display was a 6 out of 10. Certainly worth the price of admission, but I don't think it was good enough for the effort and hype.

You'd lose your bet. According to today's AZ Republic:Phoenix's celebration at Steele Indian School Park canceled the end of its show and Goodyear canceled its entire fireworks display due to strong winds. Glendale fireworks went off after a 10-minute delay. Yates said that fire department officials were watching storms closely. A lightning strike within five miles of the fireworks would have canceled the show. How can you have a contingency plan for adverse weather conditions for an event that MUST take place outside with a established rules and guidelines?

You usually never have to ask this when wathcing fireworks!! I thought since I wasn't actually there maybe I issed some stuff but we have a pretty good view here. They bragged how good it would be but I did not see anything good at all. At least last year there was a real grand finale. So yeah I was totally dissapointed!!

Alert | i watched from my backyard and i thought it was pretty good. but, it was even better not having to fight the traffic and my two little girls were upstairs snoozing away. so, it was peaceful to watch. i thought about going, but decided not to since it started so late and i have a baby and a 4 year old, and we were at a bbq all day. i just knew they would not survive the long night w/o massive temper tantrums! i was at the park for last years event and thought it was pretty good. this year seemed pretty good as well. nothing to write home about, but also nothing i would complain about. while i was outside an hour or so before, i wondered if it was going to happen at all b/c of the lighting, so i was pleased when it started. also, from what i understand, some city's cancelled this years fireworks show b/c of the lack of money. i thought we were pretty lucky to get one at all. i just sat there, giddy like a little kid, trying to guess what color the next firework would be. it put a smile on my face. so, i got plenty out of it | | this time i want a smart president!

Alert | When comparing this year's and last year's fireworks, keep in mind that last year there were twice as many. Why? Because the scheduled fireworks last year at the Salsa fetival were canceled due to a duststorm that ended the event early.
Also keep in mind that safety is a concern. Fireworks are controlled explosives with the ability to cause major damage and injuries, even under the best conditions. In Des Moine, yesterday, a mortar went the wrong way and shot into the crowd injuring 37 spectators.

Alert | | They were OK but to late I have kids and they were all to tired to enjoy the fireworks by the time they were shot off. my little one even fell asleep during it. I thought that 50min for fireworks that late at night with no grande finale was bad plaing. I thought that last years were better. I to would love a start time closer to 8:00-8:30 it would work out better for the kids
