Go here and put a 90 day hold your accounts. It prevents new credit accounts from being opened without your permission.

Also you have to keep an eye on your credit report and your bank accounts. Don't trust that a fraud alert will take care of everything. My husband had a fraud alert on his credit through all three bureaus for a year, something his work paid for due to a breach of computer records or something like that. We opened a credit account and applied for and recieved a mortgage in that time period without one call from any of the credit bureaus alerting us to a inquiry or new account opened.
