If it flooded here,  like a few years ago,  what would you save, and are you ready?

I would just grab my dogs and photo albums and be out the door. Nothing else really matters that much to me. And no, we are not prepared if it were to flood.

Just pictures and things that breathe. Well, I'd leave the fish. They wouldn't notice a difference.

Could you imagine telling people that you lost everything in a flood in Arizona?

Just talk to anyone who actually lived in Maricopa in October 1983. The town was truly flooded and the only way in or out for a week was by helicopter. Three and a half feet of water covering everything is pretty devastating, not to mention stinky as it came across the feed lots before entering town.

We also got some flooding in the 90s. I'll try to dig up some pics for ya guys. Santa Rosa, Santa Cruz, Vekol all flooded out & they closed the RR bridges. The Gila was running too, now that hasn't happened in a while!

I have insurance, it would pay for my losses. This is the dumbest question I have ever heard. If you were stranded on a desert island....

Thats not something I worry about My property elevation is about 75 feet higher in elevation than the Maricopa area with the slope headed toward town. We faired very well in the floods over the last 45 some odd years.

Hopefully Caveman you have FLOOD insurance, because standard homeowners insurance does not cover floods.  Pipe breaks in the bathroom, yes you are covered.  Flood devastates the area - no, you are not covered.  Only flood insurance covers floods.  And back in 1983, the area was not considered a flood zone.  Even though the water at my mom's house at that time was about 4-1/2 foot deep.

This IS something I have been thinking about since hearing about the flooding in the midwest. So, flood insurance is an extra cost and not standard? I will definitely look into it. Fritzy, I hadn't even thought of flood damage from pipes breaking! Thanks for bringing that up.

Does anyone know why those people out in the midwest didn't have flood insurance (just a question) since they lived on or near a river?

Anyway, thanks for the info.

Our mortgage company required that we carry flood insurance for the first three years that we lived here. We live in RED, and they insisted that we are in a flood area. Then, one day they changed their minds. We thought that was strange.
As for being prepared....are we really ever totally prepared for a natural disaster? I remember living in Northern California when the 1989 earthquake hit. My dad was driving on the Cypress structure and had just missed the part that collapsed. He stopped his truck and went to help people. We always kept a ration of EVERYTHING known to man in our garage in case of an emergency, but that doesn't help when you are away from home - even by a few miles. Since then I have carried an emergency kit in my car.
I know earthquakes are quite different from floods. My point is only that we are never as prepared as we think we are.

I do have flood insurance. As I said I am covered. I still think this is a dumb question.

If it ever happened again, I would only take my kids, animals, and I guess I should take my husband. Most of our pictures are on the computers, but we made copies and have sent them to my in-laws. I know my 13 year old would want to save the big screen tv.

My property drops more than 10 feet from end to end, and my floor is 18" off the ground. I should be ok. I usually have a couple days of drinking water on hand, and enough canned goods for several days. Now I may be stranded in my house, or away from my house, since I have to cross several washes to get to it, but I don't think it should be a major issue.

I do feel sorry for people that bought in or next to a flood zone. That's one thing I checked extensively on when I bought my property.

All of Maricopa is a flood zone. The town and surrounding area was entirely under water a few years back. Snakes were being carried in the water, all types of debris. It was yuck! Just ask some old timers what it was like when that flood happened.
