Alert | The Golf Tournament June 14, 2008 at The Raven at South Mountain was a huge success for Reiley's Medical Fund!! It was a HOT day!!! We had 116 registered golfers/sponsors and I think all but 3 people didn't make it We raised a little over $9,800 after everything was said and done. I think it went pretty well, considering this was our first time doing something so huge. We had some minor glitches and we apologize. Thank you to our volunteers, Tony and Jessi Tellez, Amy and Paul Glennon, Dona La Joie, Ashly Shearer, Sam McCallie, Howard WaGGner, John Henry Lake, Stacy Mendivil. And of course our kiddos Alexis, JC and Ean, oh and Reiley too, she was the raffle drawer. Of course thank you to everyone who played and participated in the extra raffle events!!! And to everyone who donated items for the raffles Ekin Enterprises, MVP Trophies, Oscars Pier 83, Gary Knox, High Life Limousine, John Henry's Restaurant, Dona La Joie, Maui Wowi, Dole's Retail Sales, Hooters, Showcase Home Entertainment, Jonathan Bedoe, and Tony Tellez!!! A huge thank you to H&N Landscape who is going to take over and honor a raffle prize that another landscape company was not able to fulfill. Congratulations to the winner of the 42" TV, Nancy Gardner a last minute replacement for another player!!! Congrats!!! We apologize that we forgot to thank all of our sponsors before the raffle instead of us trying to do it at the end. The kids were a little nervous and people a little anxious, and well, it was a first event like this. : ) Thank you to the following sponsors : H&N Landscape, Gary Knox and Monterey Mushroom, Administrative Solutions Unlimited, AAMCO, Firestop Southwest, Sprayfoam Southwest, Pollack, Oscars Pier 83, Showcase Home Entertainment, American Home Maintenance, John Schmidt - Citi Smith Barney and Renprint. Again thank you to Steve Cortez of Cortez Visual Commications for donating all the Banners, Greg Hladek of BeyondGraphix for donating all the tee-signs, Hortensia Shepard of MVP Trophies for donating the plaques for closest to the pin, longest drive and longest Putt contests, and to Jack of Ekin Enterprises for donating Golf Cart Awards for first, second and third place teams! Updates are this. Yesterday we also received a denial letter from APIPA to see the GI doctor in Boston. We are of course appealing the denial. I have the medical professional who got Reiley's medical records in front of this GI who was NO LONGER accepting new patients to take Reiley as a patient also writing a letter. I have also asked her pediatrician to also write a letter appealing the denial. I have emailed the doctors assistants to find out costs, as Reiley IS GOING to this doctor, even if we have to pay out of pocket for the rest of our lives. The Universe has spoken by having her records get to him and him wanting to see her, we are not going to change that for anything!!!
We live July 21st - 25th for Ohio to see Dr. Di Lorenzo, we still have no idea if this is going to approved or denied... still waiting to hear. Then July 25 - August 1st we will be in Boston to see Dr. Buie. August 9th Reiley will go into Banner Desert to have a tonsillectomy as her tonsils are at plus 3, at 530am. She will have 3 surgical procedures inside of 3 weeks.
We have received some blood labs back and one came back again as a marker of a metabolic or mitochondrial problem. We are still pending the urine labs. She has been having some temperature issues for the last several weeks and fought something for 10 days.
Anyway, updates can always be found at www.caringbridge.org/visit/reileylake and her medical website is www.reileylakemedicalfund.weebly.com

Alert | Congratulations. It's too bad that the original landscape company would not honor their commitment for the landscaping raffle. Was there a particular reason that they wouldn't do it? I almost bought a ticket at the salsa festival. My yard is already landscaped, but I thought that if I won I could sell it to my next door neighbor for a tidy little profit.

Alert | Wow Alanf, I just wanted to thank H&N for stepping up and taking care of it. Here is what happened to the best of my knowledge. Hector called my husband and told him he wanted to help us raise money for Reiley's Medical Fund. We met with Hector on April 14th. He said that he was going to sell raffle tickets at the salsa festival for $20.00 a ticket. All he needed to sell was 130 to cover his costs for the $6,000 package he was going to raffle off and the rest would go to her fund. We thought it was a HUGE task. We (John and I) were worried that he would not sell enough tickets and what happened if it came to that. He said he thought he would sell enough.
Turns out he only sold 10 tickets. I posted on this forum, another forum, craigslist and another forum about the raffle, trying to help in selling the tickets. Any tickets sold past the 130 was supposed to be donated to her fund by him. So after many attempts at trying to contact him, finally a friend contacted him and then he contacted my husband June 13th, the day before the raffle was to be held.
We didn't want him to be that much out of pocket, a lot of people offered it was a tax write off, etc, but we left it up to him what he wanted to do. It was nice of him to offer to do this for Reiley and it just didn't work out. He hopefully is RETURNING the monies to the people who bought raffle tickets.
I know that Tim Hassert H&N and Tony Tellez discussed what happened and then came to me asking if they could help at the golf tournament. H&N did not need to do this. It is very kind and amazing of them!!!
So someone will get a landscape package, I need to email him the details of what Machados had planned on offering and hopefully the people who bought the 10 tickets which I believe was only about 6 people will get their money back from Hector and one of them will win a very nice package.

Alert | I feel great compassion for your family. You have my respect for ferociously going after a diagnosis and hopefully cure. I'm sending a thousand air kisses to your little girl, which I pray will be healed in a manner and form that will bring relief to your family.

Alert | TO WHOM IT MAY CONCERN: Today while out of town with my family I received a phone call about all the negative postings about my business and myself. My intentions were purely to raise money for Reily and the Lake family. I was trying to do something from my heart not something for profit or personal gain. That being said I was only able to raise $190.00 which was very disappointing and left me in a bad spot. My only choices were to either extend the raffle,or refund the tickets.I discussed these options with John Lake on Thursday afternoon he suggested I refund the money back to the ticket holders due to the low ticket sales I expressed to john i was going out of town and would contact the ticket holders on tuesday when i returned. I have decided to honor the raffle not for myself, and not for the people who feel they have to make comments about a situation in which they do not know the whole story. I have decided to honor the raffle for Reiley which this is what it is all truly about. I will be contacting Susan Lake to arrange for Reiley to draw the winning ticket and will update everyone at that time. Thank You And God Bless Hector Machado

Alert | | Yes Hector, as I stated, we suggested that you return the money after you finally contacted us after a friend contacted you after our many, many attempts in trying to reach you. We said we thought what you offered to do for our family was very kind. We also said that we didn't want you to be out of pocket that kind of money. When you finally did speak to John and I apologize it was June 12, not 13, that you had only sold ten tickets and what should you do. John and I had discussed with you back on May 12th that it was probably just best to refund the money to the 10 people because we did not want you out of pocket that kind of money. Then again we didn't hear back from you and we were being questioned over and over about what was happening, and we couldn't tell them. So Hector, please just refund the money to the 10 people that bought tickets from you. That's all I ask. I appreciate your trying to help Reiley, I really do, and have told you so repeatedly in emails and personal messages. I have enough to worry about and don't want to be in the middle of this mess anymore. So I ask you again, refund the money and email me the ten ticket names and phone numbers personally via PM and I will PM you as well as email you this same message. I need the information by today. Thank you and I wish you and your family, and your business the best. Susan Lake

Alert | | Well if that ain't a back-handed compliment, I don't know what is. Understandably, you're frustrated and annoyed, but the public reprimanding is kinda thankless and unnecessary. A simple, "Machados is unable to provide the landscaping package at this time, but we are pleased to say that H & N has graciously stepped in," would have sufficed.

Thick, would you please go back and READ my original post. I did thank H&N for stepping in and didn't mention the other landscape company. The next poster had mentioned him in big bold print and then edited his reply and took out the name of the company. So then I had to explain the whole story. It's not a back handed compliment, I have repeatedly thanked Hector for trying to help us, I had repeatedly defended him on my other forum. I'm asking that he refund the money on the ten tickets and thanked him again.

And you "repeatedly" mention how you "repeatedly" tried to get ahold of him and he didn't get back to you until someone else intervened and it was the day before the tournament, yada yada yada. And you have repeatedly mentioned you hope he "RETURNS" the raffle money, suggesting you doubt his integrity. Unnecessary details designed solely to publicly slam him, under the guise of "thanks."

Alert | | Tell me how it could have been handled privately? I'm trying to find out who has tickets so they can get their money back. How has this become something bad that we have done? We want the people to get their money back, is that terrible to ask that it be returned? We told him May 12 to cancel and return the money because we didn't want him to be out of pocket. He didn't contact us back again after many attempts by many people until June 12th. I just didn't want people to be out of money and was ready to refund everyone out of Reiley's proceeds because we didn't want people to be out money for something they thought they had a chance of winning, a landscape package. Now we are being punished for trying to get people their money back and having someone win a package and with no benefit for Reiley. Why? Because this is about the benefit of someone getting what they thought they were buying into a chance to win - a landscape package.

Alert | You said that there were only six people who bought 10 tickets. You said that you advertised in many different places. So why the need to make such a big drama in his own community?
And honestly, if I bought a ticket for a raffle, it would be between myself and the seller. You have enough on your plate right now. It's not your responsibility. Even ethically, it is still not your responsibility. It wasn't your promise.
No one is "punishing you". We're disagreeing with what you are doing. Some things really should be kept offline. | | Poster formerly known as Sassafrass.

Alert | The point of the post was to thank everyone that helped out. It was not the original poster that brought out the other name.
In reality, even if it is a few dollars, every cent must be accounted for in a charity situation. Eanizer is just making sure that the monetary accountability is lived up to.
A single ticket that is sold for a charity raffle that is never held can become a major liability to the charity.
Now, step back and take the original post with its original meaning. Leave the drama out of this one. There is enough real drama going on for this family as it is.

Alert | | I just wanted to let everyone know that Hector just left the house. He returned the money to the people who bought the tickets and even the box of left over tickets to show that was all that he sold. I thank him for refunding everyone their money and thank him for his honesty!

Alert | The raffle was supposed to be held June 14th, 2008 at 5pm at the Chamber parking lot. That never happened. Why he himself didn't post on his thread in the home and garden section that the raffle was not going to happen and that monies would be returned to the people that purchased the ticket prior to this I do not understand. This was his raffle, his responsibiility to communicate to the community in which he works and lives in about the raffle he was selling tickets for and then not going to have. Not to have my family questioned over and over, like we had the money and then not having the raffle, we didn't organize.
My original post again was about thanking everyone who helped out with the golf tournament. Updating on what was happening with Reiley. Until the next poster mentioned the landscape companies name, (then edited his post for whatever reason) I HAD TO EXPLAIN why there wasn't a raflle held. Then it became my problem in finding out who had bought tickets so their money got returned, because that is how John and I are, HONEST PEOPLE. We want to be sure that people who believe they are helping us by purchasing a charity raffle ticket for something that wasn't going to happen, GOT THEIR MONEY BACK, or we would have refunded ourselves.
As Mallard said, the ramifications on my family in trying to raise funds of our daughter was in jeopardy. Trying to find those people who I DIDN'T know purchase tickets was my goal after the raffle didn't happen and he didn't advise anyone that he was refunding the money. So my search was so that we could take money out of Reiley's proceeds to make sure everyone received their money back, IF he didn't.
Thankfully, it didn't come to that. The money was returned and our family can focus what we should have been focusing on all along, which is finding a diagnosis for our daughter who is chronically ill. Who may not live past the age of 10 for all we know, getting her to the doctors out of state who can possiblly tell us what ails our daughter and what if anything may help her live a longer healthier life.
So I ask everyone to stay off my back. This has been very hard on my family. This drama created was not our doing, this raffle was not our doing. We ONLY wanted to be sure people received their money back and if not make sure they got it back out of our own daughter's proceeds for her MEDICAL CARE. Makes me a terrible person doesn't it to make sure my daughter finds help and people get their money back. Shame on me!
