comp=comprehensive; pays for car if stolen, fire, collision with animal or object

collision: pays for car if your fault in accident

Yeah, high deduct, but only one of us drives regular to work.  other car just sits.

What me worry?

I was"asking" tongue in cheek.  I don't have comp/collision. I don't plan on having it ever again.

Hello regan,

I am too from the ROW. (Rest of world) as someone earlier posted.

Trust me, not being able to take your kids out to vacation or buying them what they said, would not in anyway hamper the values and morals and eduation you need to give your child.

I used to share my toys, books, room, bags, school items etc with my siblings, cousins etc. sometimes even clothes. Never went for a vacation. Never had a cell phone till 23. Never had a car till 25. Used to travel by bus, used the "public" telephones, the ones with the coins if needed, never got any pocket money, if i needed to buy something i simply asked my parents. We used to get water for only 1 hr in the morning. So we used to fill up these drums of water for use during the day. So i never had the luxury of a shower using gallons of water. I and my family used to bathe, with a bucket of water each.

We did not have airconditioner and made use of fans. We used to live in small rooms and have only small nooks to call our own, rather than a entire huge room.

And despite all this, i love my family, i speak to them everyday. Share the smallest things.

I respect them even more, becuase they were able to educate me and provide me all i needed(necessities), with limited resources. I think i would not be able to respect them or love them as much as i do today, if i had recieved all luxuries. I would probably have taken them for granted.

I empathize with you and will pray and hope things get better for you. But let me tell u this, children do understand. Expensive toys and vacations dont "contribute" to a child's upbringing

Question: where can one buy eggs in Copa?

I guess I will add my 2 Cents to the conversation.

I upgraded our Orbitel t.v. to HD--you know with the box and it was only $10 a month more so we have waaay more entertainment now than before. The offshoot was that we got
rid of Netflix and saved $17 a month.

We cancelled our water home delivery.

We combined our cars and our house into one package and saved a ton on insurance.

I think one way we can really save $ is to not eat out. I like to cook so I do it and find it a pleasurable experience. But the younger gang--I mean not 50+ - I don't think they cook from scratch much. I would like to form a club--a cooking club where we meet once a month and share ideas on how to save $ and time by cooking from scratch. Share recipes and ideas and make friends at the same time.

Now you want to talk about how to save money.....this is a huge way by cooking from scratch.

I really feel that our families would be healthier if we cooked from scratch---and quit eating out or diving into fast food. Just think of the fat and salt you will not be getting an overabundance of.

I love to go to thrift stores. I save a lot this way.

Savers is the place I shop...on Sat. morning early !!!

There is one in Casa Grande and one in Tempe.

If I need something I have my husband pick it up while he is in town. We save a lot on gas this way.

I don't shop at Bashas any longer....but I do stop in and take advantage of their sales
like 1.99 this week for 2 lbs of strawberries. It's a good idea to keep an eye on the sales
ads.

I take advantage of Fry's sales and Bashas. I feel Bashas has the best BEST quality of meat so I go there....and Costco. I buy items in quantity at Costco so it saves big time to do this.
Example: 2 bottles of 20 oz worchestire for about $4 and big lots of canned tomatoes, chicken broth.....etc. You get the idea. and aluminum foil....2 in a pack....a great deal because these rolls are huge. They last forever!

Fry's has the best price on groceries in general and when you buy something compared to Bashas you get the larger sizes. We save a lot by shopping at Fry's. But we also save a whole bunch by shopping in bulk at Costco. Overtime.

We did the coop here in town before but we have not done this for a while. I didn't want to do it in the summer. Maybe in the fall we will begin again.

I feel I do just about as good if we take advantage of the produce sales and freeze the items when they are on sale.

When I wash my clothes, I dry 2 medium loads at one time instead of washing and drying separately. I also wash once a week on Monday's

I usually buy items that are on sale first before I will buy anything else when I go shopping.
Example if corn is on sale instead of green beans, then I buy that instead of what is not on sale. Then that is what we eat that week....what's on sale.

When we drive out of the driveway, we slowly get our car up to the speed limit instead of going fast real quick to get it up there..if no one is behind us. It takes less gas. We always drive 5 miles less per hour than everyone else. It could save big on gas overtime and could save your life too.

Cook for 2 meals and not just one. It saves time and electricity.

Like cook meatloaf mon Monday and eat it again on Wed.

That is all I can think of right now. Oh, we don't eat out any longer...unless it is fast good.
But on Tues we do do the wing night....once in a while....that way we feel like we are not too cheated....but as far as places like Olive Garden, which we love...no more.

Now we stop and think.....do I really need this or that before we buy it. A lot can be saved by not buying lil things all through the week. You know ... those I don't really need this or that items that we can do without.

Cleaning products....vinegar, baking soda, powdered laundry detergent, clorox
It is amazing how much can be saved by using these items to clean your home and they
are not as toxic.

Thanks to everyone for their input....really great ideas.

I agree that vacations and expensive toys are not what is important.  The thing that is bothering me at the moment is my parents keep taking my oldest son on vacation with them.  It is great for him, but then he can't figure out why we can't do that for him.

Regan-I understand this can be easier said than done. I would tell my kids the reasons why things are the way they are. I tell them our financial situation. I think it gives them an opportunity to learn now. They may not completely understand, but with time, it will be easier. I understand it's a difficult period, but this can be an opportunity to teach a valuable lesson to your child. i think your son will appreciate your honesty even if it seems difficult right now.

wasnt sure about tongue in cheek
but wanted to be good neighbor and explain anyway
figured something was awry because you are purportedly ace financial advisor
both cars are 07's and brand new
surely you would advise some sort of protection as comp and collision on new cars, ne pas?

What me worry?

I would say that a good number of people finance vehicles. As you likely know, the financing company requires comp/collision. I suggest people avoid financing altogether. It's one's own choice to have comp/collision preference.  I let people know my bias in this as well. I have and give my reasons for it.

My latest vehicle was maybe 1 yr old or so when I bought it. I got title outright 6 months later and cancelled comp/collision. I've done that with all my vehicles I have owned(hasn't been that many).

I understand why someone would want to have it. I am more comfortable WITHOUT it. I don't know anyone that looks forward to paying the insurance premium, including myself. So, I choose to keep that money and put it to different use.

Instead of being on a cycle of purchasing a new vehicle(expense) that requires financing(interest) and comp/collision( insurance premium),I choose to hold the money at put it to work(invest/reduce debt) for me, a reverse premium if you will.

I don't owe anything on my vehicle, but at $15.66 per month for $500 deductible collision, $0. deductible comprehensive, there is no way I'd be without it.

CBob: exactly!  would take a real financial genius to parlay 15.66 a month into paying for a car that is burned up, vandalized, stolen etc.  I just do not understand the balance here.

If that's all you pay in total insurance and comp/collision for new vehicles, that's really good. I'm not at a loss if something happens to a vehicle. I don' have any attachment. Everyone has a preference, I have mine.

That's what the comp / collision portion of my premium costs, not my entire premium, and my vehicle is 5 yr. old Pontiac Montana with 67,000 miles.  I pay one $448.premium annually ($37.33 per month) for $500,000 / 250,000 / 100,000 full coverage with an extra $25,000 per person medical expense, towing and substitute transportation.  I think to get rates like this you have to be over 55, have a high credit score and no tickets in the last 3 years.

I almost did the same thing.  Usually, the theory that "if something sounds too good to be true, it probably is" holds true, but in this case my investigation disclosed it was true and that they pay their claims better than the average insurance company.  MetLife also saves me over $100 per year on homeowners insurance.  Also, we have MetLife Dental and it was the best and cheapest of a number of plans that my wife and I considered.
