Alert | | oh yeah. i've even stopped buying some "treats" from the grocery store that i can live without. i am thankful and feel blessed every day that my husband isn't one of the many thousands of americans who have lost their jobs (knock on wood.) so, i try not to complain or gripe about living w/o some entertainment or things i would like to buy. right now we are basically buying the neccesaties and trying to save every penny we can. | | we finally voted in a smart president!

Alert | sadly, we've had to tighten the belt for awhile, since my hubby was forced into a 30% salary reduction last fall. He hasn't been able to find a job with a comparable salary Oh, and we have a diesel truck, at nearly $5 a gallon! YIKES!
Let's see: We reduced our orbitel services to bare bones thermostat is set at 85 during the day 82 at night showers are timed and held to under 5 minutes. we've stopped watering our backyard (and it looks so sad ) all non essential lights (including porch lights, night lights) have been turned off we eat lots of pasta Car trips are held to the bare minimum No more "luxury items" from the store (soda, oreos) absolutly no more dining out no summer activites for our kids we have a dirtbike and a quad listed for sale (but no takers 'cause everyone else is poor too!) I've sold a bunch of my kids clothes and toys on craigslist
and that's just what came off the top of my head......

Alert | justagirl - WOW, you do know the meaning of tightening the belt. I hope your husband can find a better paying job and you can have a few more extras in your life. Me, I'm using coupons more. When I go to the drugstore or grocery store I buy generic, unless the name brand really is worth it. I try to buy whatever is on sale that week, especially when it comes to meat and dairy products. Just keep a watch on what is being spent each day, each week. I'm good about watching the electric and water bill. However, my husband is not. When he is home I'm always going behind him turning off lights, fans, whatever. I still haven't been able to break him of the habit of leaving the water running while he is brushing his teeth! | | Senior Member Joined July, 2005

Alert | With a tight schedule to pay enormous payments like a mortgage the we felt was adequate, at the time; what does one tend to cut out? Half down on one bill, promise to pay on the other, cheap bottle of wine and a generic carton of milk. Pay off a credit card with the payment to the electric bill now late, knowing that $85 will be saved every month to go to other necesities that cannot be pinched anymore! Pinch here on the amount of dietary intake, rationing cheap portions of Beenie-Weenies' mixed with Mac-N-Cheez, two week old cottage cheese(that was originally marked for day old when purchased) served on the side...MMmmmnmnmnnnmmm; SOUND GOOD? Well we haven't had to do the latter yet, nor skip on bills yet. We do feel the crunch of the economy and think about cutting out resonable short monetary chingalettas', ie: food, gas preferences, allowances, etc. What DO you cut out to better manage the money?

Alert | wow everyone has given some pretty darn good examples. we have taken down our directtv service to only 2 receivers, eliminated some data packages from our VZW bill, only really drive the truck in town rather than taking it to phx, going shopping at goodwills 50% off sale&you can get some good deals especially on kids clothes vs paying 10 for a pair of boys jean shorts i can get a like new pair at goodwill for 2 dollars. you know even though the days are 100 degrees, the nights cool down to around 75 by 11pm&so i turn the air off and open up the windows, that helps save $$$ on the air bill.
@forensicunit, i am sorry to hear about what happened to your mom. i hope she keeps her chin up and doesnt give up hope things will get better | | listened for, they cannot be heard;looked for, they cannot be seen; felt for, they cannot be touched: old ninja proverb

Yes, I have diff. situation than most forum people as I am on solar only.
in 2004 when we moved in, propane was 1.05 a gallon, now it has been as high as 3.50 a gallon. We were using propane for almost everthing...even bought 3 propane furnaces, 40000 BTU...house is even equiped with plumbed in propane wall lamps in most rooms.
ergo, the switch to electric as much as possible since it is free...oh wait, we did spend over 40K on a new PV solar system, which includes ...yeah... a propane powered 12KW genset. So the elect. is not really free, just paid for in advance. And the payback based on present APS rates will not happen till I am pushing up daisies. (Senior Citizen) | | What me worry?

On the other hand, tell me about your dirtbike. Where is it listed? Sure, we could have walked away. $2000 a month saved on a house payment. but living in our truck with 3 kids and 2 dogs just didn't seem like a good option. so we had to cut other things to stay non-homeless. it's been tough. i hate telling my kids that they won't get swimming lessons this year unless grandma pays for them (which she did) or we are having mac n cheese and hotdogs AGAIN this week. going to the coinstar machine with the piggy banks to pay for this weeks milk and bread is awful. but what else is one to do? hopefully the economy will turn around, we'll regain some value to our house, hubby will get a great new job. or we'll win the lottery (which would be a miracle since we don't play ) I try not to get too down about it. I think the cycle trader ad just expired, again. 2000 Yamaha YZ 250 $1500. my hubby is better with all the specs. 2005 yamaha YFZ 450 quad. lots of extras, set up for desert racing. he just lowered the price on that, i'm not sure what

Alert | just a girl..... i understand how you feel about telling your kids they have to do without certain things this year. but let me just say, i come from a background where my mother raised two girls on her own and there were many nights we ate corn flakes (from the big, white generic box from back in the day) with powdered milk. we ate eggs for protein instead of meat and we had LOTS of pasta. i did without many things growing up, but i really don't remember ever feeling deprived. my mom gave us so much love and so the rest really didn't matter. i'm sure your kids feel the same way! as long as you all have each other, everything else will eventually fall into place. i think, growing up the way i did, i really have a strong sense of compassion that i may not have had otherwise. everything is a learning experience. at the very least, i've learned how to be very thrifty! i guess my point is that when your kids are older, they aren't going to remember how many times they had to eat mac n cheese, they will remember the mom who made it for them and loved them. we too are having to tighten the belt on many things. my one gripe is that i would love to lessen our bills with qwest! problem is, i can't get rid of direct tv b/c i have a contract and it'll cost a bunch of money to break it. then, i have a landline that i have to keep b/c of my ADT security system. i would have to pay $ to break that contract as well. so, right now it would cost me a small fortune to get rid of some of these services that i don't see as absolute neccesities. and if i break the bundle, qwest will break the bank! i could do w/o cable altogether, but again can't afford to break all of these contracts. i feel stuck in that aspect! | | we finally voted in a smart president!

Alert | | Yes. My wife and my idea of belt tightening is buying a home in Ahwatukee and getting out of Maricopa. We love our home (although it is small) but rising gas costs are killing us. Our new house is literally right across the street from the Park 'N Ride in Ahwatukee. I can walk to it and take the bus to work. Between the less miles of driving from the wife and myself, we figure we'll easily save over $500 a month in gas costs. That more than makes up for the loss we are taking on renting our house out here.

Alert | | As far as belt tightening, I think I started doing it because the hysteria is making me feel like I don't have any money either. I rarely go to Fry's anymore. My husband picks up the sale items at Fresh n Easy on the way home from work and I buy fruits and and veggies from a co-op. I don't let us go to restaurants anymore. This is actually the first time we've eaten all our food before it goes bad. Really I just don't go to Fry's because it puts me in a bad mood. That place is a zoo/nightmare/traffic jam. If I want to go somewhere I just go swimmining and then to happy hour at Sonic for cheap entertainment. So I guess the high gas prices are saving me money!? | | Despite All My Rage I Am Still Just A Rat In A Cage

Alert | mw......I know how you feel about all these contracts with cable, phone, cell phone, dedicated PC landline, etc. I look at these bills each month and think, when did it become necessary to pay for all of this? I remember when TV was free, phone was reasonable as long as you didn't run up long distance calls, there were no cell phones and nobody but companies had computers. The age of instant informaton and being constantly in touch has cost us quite a bit. Has it been worth it? I am determined not to start paying for radio stations. There are plenty of choices that are free. I also will not pay for a navigation system, I'll use a map! A friend of mine has a navagation system and not only is it costly to buy a car with one, I found out that every year or so she has to pay several hundred dollars to "update" it!! Trying to keep up with the Jones when it comes to all this new technology that comes out each year has become too much. Within a year things become obsolete so you have to buy a new version. That's how they keep making their money. Guess I'll just have to become an old fogie (sp?). I refuse to keep increasing our debt to have these new gadgets.
