Ok so over the past year my husband has made several comments about wanting an ipod or MP3 to download music, and I thought maybe I could surprise him for Father's Day.  Does anyone have any advice on what to buy?  I don't think he's wanting to download videos, probably just music...

I had an mp3 player, one of the little jobbies from Radio Shack or something... it help about 2 albums worth of songs, enough to get me through a good workout.

But I LOVE my I-pod... while I am sure there are bigger and better models out there, I will never ever go back to my old mp3 player.

Apple makes quality products. The only downfall is that they are proprietary. You HAVE to buy their hardware/software, which can be more expensive, but that's probably why they work more consistently. If I were trying to save a few bucks, I'd buy an MP3 player.

Checkoout www.buy.com for great prices and info.

Costco Business Center on i17/Indian School has the best prices in town on Ipods and mp3 players, if you don't like waiting for shipping.

Cnet.com is also an excellent unbiased source for information.

I've had a few iPods (regular and nano) and none of them worked correctly for very long. Typically what would happen is that I would go to play a song or podcast and the iPod would just sit there at 0 seconds (or wherever I was last in the song/podcast) and refuse to play anything. I would end up having to reset it and then it would play again, but it always lost my location (pain in the neck on a long podcast trying to figure out where you were). The Apple Store replaced it once but blamed it on my music library, even though the library plays fine on other computers and MP3 players. Plus I had a few times on each device where I would connect it and iTunes didn't recognize it, and wanted to reformat it.

I ended up getting a Zune and haven't looked back. No problems, no scratches on the display or case like the iPod gets. It's a little bulky, but they have slimmer flash based Zunes now too.

If you are just looking for a basic MP3 player, I recommend the SansaClip. Good quality sound and you can get quite a bit of music on it when formated properly.

There is a reason why Apple has a 71% market share in portable music players.

They make a great product.

Exactly. I stay away from Apple products are often as possible. I've been forced to use Mac computers before and it is so frustrating because they are not intuitive at all. I still haven't bought an Ipod; my phone works well as one so far.

No, they make a sought-after/keep-up-with-the-joneses product. If it were great, why does it scratch so easily?

I had a Sony/Nike mp3 and loved it. Then it started having issues from over use. I now have an Ipod nano. I bought a clear cover to keep it from getting scratched. I also bought the Nike thing for it. I really like it. I need to recalibrate, not as accurate as the Sony one, but we will see. I do love being about to download pod casts. our church has it so the new message automatically downloads each week.

I have an Ipod Shuffle and I love it. It hasn't given me any problems and if you are only looking to download music and not videos, I think it is perfect.
