Just want to give everyone the details of the 2nd Annual Firefighters Ice Cream Social at Water and Ice, Thursday May 22 from 1-7pm.  This event is a fund raiser for the Firefighter Relief Fund, a general fund to help injured, disabled or deaths of firefighters.  Please come out and say hi to your local firefighters, enjoy a cool treat and have some laughs.  Last years event was a huge success and we hope to exceed our totals from last year.

I am curious why do fire departments and police departments have these relief funds? I know your jobs are more dangerous but don't your benefits and life insurance hedge against anything bad happening? I drive into Phoenix everyday for my job and could get hit by a semi but there is not relief fund for my work. I am not trying to put down your organization I am just curious why things are this way.

Because the Local Fire Fighter's Union donates money to Firefighters all over the US in situations Maricopa Medic mentioned. A lot of those FF's don't have benefits, for example volunteer FF's like Maricopa used to be. Also some times cities find ways not to pay death insurance or will not pay for injury that they cannot prove happened "while working."

Why not just come out and support yout local fire department? They don't ask questions when they get a call to help the community. As a wife of a firefighter, I find it sad that you would even have to ask or make such a comment caveman. I'm sorry your job doesn't offer the same opportunities but there are jobs out there that have perks that police and fire would like to benefit from too. The community needs to support our local fire department and what better way to do that than with ice cream!!

Proud Momma of 2 beautiful boys!!!

I have never needed any emergency services, but am very grateful to know that they are just down the street and would be willing to risk their lives to safe mine or my families lives. The majority of them do not get paid anywhere near what they should for the potential life threatening issues they could be putting themselves in. Thank you to all of you who are FireFighters and police................

What a great place! Had it not been for this fundraiser, I don't think we would have gone there, but now that we have, WOW! I didn't know we had a cute place like that in town and now I'll look for excuses to go back again.

Yes, that's really my name

I am very sorry I missed the ice cream social.  I have been out of town this week, and didn't return until late Thursday.  I was on a volunteer ambulance service in the midwest and every year the ambulance and fire department had a pancake breakfast and it was a huge success!  People would drive from 50 miles to come.  I just want to commend all of the firefighters and ambulance personnel in Maricopa for the impecable job they perform.  The ice cream social is a great idea and I only hope I can attend the next one.

First I would like to thank all of you that have replied to this forum posting, showing support for the men and women of your local fire department.  I would also like to thank all of those that weathered the storms yesterday, and came to Water and Ice to show your support there.  We had a nice turn out considering the the weather, and can assure everyone that the money raised will be put to good use.  Thank you again for all of your support.
