I started that thread. And I ended that thread. Why did I end it? Because I underestimated the STUPIDITY and IGNORANCE of so many people. I thought it would be rather humorous when I started it. boy was I wrong!!! You people that made it so ugly need to take a good look at yourselves in the mirror. With some of you it goes way beyond skin deep. Just plain ugly.

I'm not going to point any fingers at one site vs another, or anybodies ability to perform the job of an elected official. I know who I will and won't vote for through my own research. Does a businessman's op/ed sway my decision? Not in the least.

But now I know so much more about several people that use and abuse these sites.

Good luck to ALL the candidates today. I hope that everybody that had an opinion here also has the integrity to go vote.

Oh the drama..................so interesting. I guess somewhere amid the rediculous name calling and he said she said two new council members will get elected. This reminds me of the reality show Kid Town of whatever it was where the kids tried to start and run a city, only to ball their eyes out every episode.

Totally agree with you.  There are no winners here at all.  And true colors have shown there from all sides.  No one was right but everyone was wrong.

I've actually wondered for a while who the adults   Thank goodness that all this mud slinging is actually only viewed by less than 1% of the city of Maricopa.

Humorous?

There is nothing funny about any of it. Funny though how it lasted until Carl's response was put up.

Go figure. Humurous, yeah right...

OK, then let me try this. Here is some additional information from Carl. I am not going to request it be removed under any circumstance, so if it is removed, it will not be by my request. Here is what Carl has said, in writing:

"I have read the opinion piece written by Mr. Bartle.

I will not shy away from any of the items he commented on, nor have I when I have been asked them directly before.

First, being a small business owner is difficult. I came from a corporate environment and had a support structure in place. I have made my mistakes as a business person, but I don't think that has any bearing on my ability to serve Maricopa. My record as a public servant stands on its own. I have been on the Public Safety Committee since December of 2005 and was voted in as Vice-Chairman by the committee itself just this past winter. As part of the Public Safety Committee I helped found the MASH Coalition and was a regular member until I was elected to the Fire District Board, a panel which again voted me as Vice-Chairman. I helped start the Traffic Task Force. I also chaired the Prop 400 Committee which passed with a 94% approval. I attend nearly all city council meetings and am prepared for those each time.

Second, my campaign staff and I have had our own internal communication problems which has caused some failures to get reports submitted in time. As far as funding, we continue to work on collecting donations and appreciate all the support we have received up to this point. With so many people running for office and the economic conditions we are in right now, donations didn't come in at the levels we had hoped and as a small business owner, financing my own campaign has been a struggle.

I won't even get into a debate over what "friends" may or may not have been on my MySpace page at any given time.

The last two points have been played out over and over again. To clarify for everyone, my username was removed from their site. I was unable to post on their site, even if I wanted to defend myself. I never asked for my username to be removed, yet it was.

I am a human being who has done nothing but support the community of Maricopa since moving here in 2004.

Sincerely,
Carl Diedrich"

Yeah, apparently I can... I would have thought it was limited.

Some free advice - Don't type the phrase "really big" into google if you have safe search turned off!

That's why this forum is falling apart, you don't let people delete threads because we're all adults here. If you hit the Submit button the consequences are your own for the words you type on your keyboard.

Move threads, lock threads or suspend people if they are out of control. You start getting itchy trigger fingers and teeter totter 'nobody knows what the man behind the curtin is doing' moderation; people get tired of it and leave.

Nobody to blame but the mods.

True statements ETR. I was FF and FG. I did provoke. I did start this thread and am actually sorry now that I did. However, if you review posts, I believe you will notice a shift towards useful from me as opposed to the past. However, I did yank the thread and don't regret that at all. It was posted for my amusement in a moment of weakness. I'm just glad that I can say I didn't continue throughout the thread.

Thank you for sharing your limited opinion and have a wonderful week.

Alan. I guess the big question is whether you were asked to take down by anyone or whether that was entirely your decision without any influence at all. I have to tell you until you decided to yank this thread and claim it was intiated in humor I used to take your posts seriously. Now however I cannot for I will never know that what you are posting about (either schools or city) is a true opinion or just a shot a humor. Too bad, I thought you had some good insight. Not anymore though, you took that away along with the thread. But I still wonder if that was a all your decision.

I noticed also that my comments on the actual opinion piece were removed too. No email sent no pm that I was in violation of terms of use. Just removed, not rebutted but removed. Odd but I posted nearly the same thing on this thread and it is also gone.

Oh yeah I forgot,

What I had posted on both the actual opinion piece and the removed thread was the simple connection that the two council member candidates that had negative opinion pieces posted about them (Will and Carl) were the two council member candidates that, according to the campaign finance reports reported by this "news site" showed that niether of them paid 85239.com for any advertising.

I called into question that odd relationship on a "news site" and it was simply removed wherever it was posted. Nice objectivity. It is no wonder that city officials and candidates do not want to talk to this site.

Just a coincidence? I think not.....

Actually, the 85239.com site CANNOT be a news source, as being a media outlet there are certain first amendment considerations that come into play. As an example, if I posted a response in the thread, and it was not offensive, was not illegal, was not immoral, nor gave out personal or information of a senstive nature, then having a media outlet remove my comments would infringe on my first amendment rights. Especailly if my comments were removed without informing me as to why the removal occured. As such, Scott Bartle would potentially guilty of a crime, and if this were a media, news outlet, could lose any federal license over this.

Since this is not a media outlet, and since it is not regulated as a news outlet, Scott can give his opinion, but NOT as a credible news outlet. If he would claim that he is running a news outlet, he would have to answer about.

I completely understand. One thing for you to consider though is that I actually gave the thread no input, as opposed to many of my other threads. I'm surprised you didn't pick up on that. I saw the nastiness that I had created with the thread, and I put it to rest. The Mods even asked me if I was absolutely sure. Nobody but the posters influenced that decision.

gilbert, are Fox News or CNN news outlets? Their web sites have forums for the different articles and "hosts" and they will remove comments that violate their terms of use. Just asking.

The key of course is "VIOLATES THEIR TERMS OF USE". We have a statement that the entire posting was removed at the request of one person. So, all of those who posted had their comments removed. Not because the comments violated anything. That is the crux of the entire issue. You can legally limit speech so that it is not offensive, illegal, inflamatory, if you are a media outlet. Fox and CNN CANNOT simply remove an entire set of postings because the person who started the thred requests it. Doing so, would hamper the ability to have free speech, as then anyone in the press could simply delete comments they did not agree with. Although media outlets may have certain biases, they do not simply remove comments from public postings they do not agree with.
A private business person, not running a media outlet can haphazardly remove anything. AGAIN, none of us who had our comments removed received any notification that they were being removed, none of us who posted made offensive comments. None of us "violated the terms of usage". If Scott wants to argue he is amedia outlet, have him show us his FCC license, as I do not think he has one. Which of course he would need to be a media outlet.
