In 30 years of teaching in a high school (I retired 2 yrs ago), I noticed a marked deterioration in the willingness of both students and their parents to take responsibility for their actions. Many students refuse to accept any restrictions on their behavior or responsibility for their actions. Many times at parent conferences parents have said that they have to deal with the kid at home and it was our job to deal with him at school. More often than not, if the administration tried to deal firmly with the child, the parents would say that we were picking on their angelic darling because he was black, white, Hispanic, Asian, or any other group you can think of. Their next comment was usually that they were going to sue us all. Much of the problem was the result of spineless school boards that refused to institute and enforce strict rules of behavior that had firm repercussions for violations. At the first threat of a lawsuit the board would fold like a lawn chair and settle on a compromise that would amount to a slap on the wrist. Over time this destroyed the authority of teachers and administrators. This will not change until school boards get backbones and until we get a judicial system that will support school administrators and teachers. Don't hold your breath. Kudos to you parents who are doing a good job. I just wish that there were more of you. |
