05/02/2008 8:54 AM Alert

I use to love to come on and talk with friends, get information and sometimes even enjoy a good debate.  But for the last few months I've noticed that things are getting really bad.

It's almost a ghost town here.  Last night for example my last post was at 12:34 am and now at 8:45 am there has only been 14 posts.  Before there would be 14 posts within 5 minutes and no not from the same user.

People are getting banned or put on time for reasons that I just don't understand.  I know that there are rules and rules are made to be followed but I have to ask the questions "How old are we?"

I know that a few can and have hurt it for everyone but I think that things have gotten a bit out of hand and overboard.   Can't we all just play nice in the sand box together?

many people moved on (or were forced out) due to the mods... people just got tired of being treated like children really... and the mods are hit and miss at best... some people would get banned for one thing.. while others didn't.. etc..

When this site first came up, it was great.. you could post your personal experiences with local businesses and recommend others.. now that is all sporatic.. some threads get pulled and people get banned for mentioning other websites, local people, etc...

I mean really.. when local businesses aren't recommending this place... I would say that's a bad sign..

I grow tired of this site, it's mediocre at best... I'll check in on occasion.. but I'll spend my surfing time elsewhere...

I post on occasion. Honestly, though, I think the audience has left the building for the most part.
This has a lot to do with who was banned and why. The bannings became too Draconian and really took away the abilty to speak one's mind without knowing that a banning was coming.

The start of this really happened when a local business owner was banned for doing something innocenty. This was the same person that was voted best business in Maricopa recently and who did, and continues to do, a tremendous amount for the community of Maricopa.

I think this situation is pretty silly and, in the end, hurtfull to the growth of Maricopa.

That is just the way I see it. I hope that changes some time soon.

Let X=X

I don't think it is due to people being banned, or topics removed. I just think the same small group of posters are on it all the time anymore and nothing really new or interesting gets discussed. Unfortunately, it's become the same ol' same ol'.

Not sure if it's the same for everyone, but I signed up for the forum and had an account but still could not post to the forums. After 2 weeks I ended up emailing the admin (whoever that is) to ask what was up and was then magically given access to the forum.

Perhaps other newbies are experiencing the same roadblock.

Just my opinion.....but people can be quite negative on here. I know I haven't posted in a while because the negativity just gets old. You can only take so much. Oh well. Not a big deal.

It was wonderful once, wasn't it?

I have lost a lot of interest since the bannings and the power plays. It wasn't just the mods, though. People, adults, were behaving like kids and making it unpleasant for others to be here. That was the first exodus. Then the bannings removed the problem posters, but subsequent bannings removed decent members who dared to ask questions. It created an "us against them" mentality and this site lost a lot of support and credibility.

It seems that one particular religious cult has  taken over and you know what that means.

What me worry?

To "Hudson" who is new to Maricopa, WELCOME and we're glad to have you here.  This is still a great place to get information about anything - just ask.

Well Folks,  I guess I'm just to unimformed to know any better,  I think it's a pretty good site and I believe I'm going to keep on thinking that, but if I stop thinking that,  I'll just delete it's address from my favorites list and move on,  altho it seems like a bunch of pretty good people on here to me and I enjoy reading what they have to say.

The funny thing about it is that after reading all the responses I will actually have to say that everyone is right.  The people's attitudes have changed....good or bad....doesn't really matter.  It just isn't the same as it use to be.

Why....honestly I think that it's everything.  The banning, the competition, the altitudes, the lies, the truths and everything in between. I remember the days where I would have had to admit that I was totally addicted to 85239.com and was so mad when the site would do down for a bit for how ever long was just way to long in my book.

I've made awesome life long friends, learned a lot about my community,  my city, and had some great debates.  I wouldn't trade any of it for the world and I will admit that I owe a sense of gratitude to 85239.com for all that.   But I do have to admit that those days are gone and probably will not be back.  I did a quick check again tonight and from 6:00 pm till midnight there were only 18 threads that had been hit.    And this thread had been viewed 548 time but only 11 posts on it.  Totally unheard of before.

I feel like I'm saying goodbye.  I'm really not but do feel that something wonderful is now gone.  I'm still going to be around I just wanted to know how everyone else felt about it.  Guess it's kind of like our kids....gotta let them grow up and move on with their own lives.

well i'm not sure if you noticed...there are more for sale signs and foreclosures then i've ever seen in my life. there is no one left to chat with. LOL. plus i think people are just getting bored. we need a different form of social life. for goodness sake our only starbucks is in the Basha's!!!! Its not the most inviting atmosphere! I guess my point is...people are getting bored with themselves and what this town has to offer. We need something new again..that is our drive as copians! Then and only then would we have a new topic to discuss. No new news, no new conversation! plan and simple

I tend to disagree that they are leaving town.  Sure people are departing Maricopa but it isn't in the droves that people think that it is.  I still see at least three or four Uhaul coming into Maricopa weekly.

All the people that I've met here are still here are not looking for a different type of social life.  We all still do the same things.  We just don't post on here as much.  And the biggest reason was all the negativity and angry that was thrown out.

I know why on this end I guess what I was looking for was why did everyone else part ways?

Again a bit of non-scientific research.....since midnight last night only 15 threads have been hit by only 9 different users.  Keep in mind that is for a period of 9 hours.  Either there is a look of looky loos or people are just not here anymore.

I think all forums go through phases like these. I've checked a few other forums that I used to frequent on a regular basis and they no longer have the traffic they once did. Some of their top posters have moved on as well, which has the effect we're seeing here.

I think the people on here just need to make the first move and post a new topic. Don't be afraid some people like mine and most of them don't.

I have noticed, especially on the politics forum, that when you try to engage in a debate on an issue, at some point some of those who disagree with you will start to get personal and insulting. It seems that if they hold an unsupportable position this tactic is used to shut down the discussion. This is a shame. In the past I have debated with people who presented such strong rational arguments for their positions that, even if I disagreed with those positions, caused me to reexamine my ideas. I have valued such exchanges but they seem to happen less and less on this forum. It is a shame that some people can not engage in a debate and still respect the other side.
