was broken into today. They drove up the res road and jumped the back fence.
I was out for a few hours today and didn't hear anything.

Police knocked on my door about 4:30 to ask if I'd been home and heard anything.

My suggestion is to lock doors and windows when not home, set your alarm if you have one, leave "normal" lights on (those that are on when you are home should be on when gone) and leave a tv or radio on if you normally have one on when home.

The people that live there have 4 dogs that were in the backyard at the time. The dogs bark whenever someone is near the house and don't stop until they leave the property or the recognize the people, so I'm guessing (and this is just a GUESS!) that they knew the dogs.

Sounds like someone that knew the family. Why break into a house that has 4 dogs when you can go to many more that have no animals that may fight with you? Do you know what was taken or any other details? I now see why the person in that other thread does not feel safe.

That house is a couple houses down from us and we heard that they took everything of value. Supposedly the dogs are in the backyard in a cage/crate thing. If I heard those dogs barking no way am I going back there and jumping that fence. I have a feeling it was someone that knows them or knows the set up (dogs caged up and what not), maybe relatives of a house keeper or something?? Who knows for sure. How did a house get broken into in broad daylight?

Same way most break in happens......

Most of the time we don't take the time to get to know our neighbors. Most people drive up opening their garages, drive into the garage and before the car is stopped the door is coming down.

The first line of defense is your neighbors. Get to know them. Get to know each other's schedules and if something is out of the norm call the cops. That's what they are here for...to help and protect us.

How many people can really say that they know their neighbors? And I'm talking 4 in each direction.

Well, there is no one behind them (reservation), person to the left works days, then me, then empty lot to the right, people in next lot work days, only 2 houses across the street 1 is home most days but unless he was outside at the time he wouldn't have heard anything.

I don't hear their dogs bark unless my windows on that side are open or I'm outside. Often times my dog barks if he hears them barking, but then I wasn't home a portion of the day.

MOST home break-ins happen during the day now because most people work during the day.

I do try to keep an eye on things around here but short of being out "patroling" it's still a hit or miss thing. These are all single story houses so you can't see what's going on in the neighbors yard, it really wouldn't have taken much for them to hop the fence and once that's done no on can see them.

Maybe we all should plant low growing cactus along our back fences and hope someone hears the screams when they land in em---J/K (sorta)

There are things that you can plant that will deter them. I had a hedge of bougainvilleas along the inside of the street side of my wall when I lived in S. Phoenix. They're messy, but take very little water and do slow the kids down from jumping the wall for kicks and grins! They are also very pretty. It took quite a few tries to get them all going...someone kept jumping the wall and landing on top of them, breaking them off! Grrrrr. Hence, the need for BIGGER bougainvilleas!

I like the idea of putting glass in the top of the wall, but I think that's illegal in this country. They made a fellow who lived along Southern in S. Phoenix remove all of his. That slows them down quite a bit. Anything you can do that will tell them...this isn't as easy/pretty/likely... a target as that next one...

About 3 weeks ago a group of kids ages 7-17 broke into a house on Alhambra street. The police arrived and found that the kids were looking for a place to sleep since they were having problems at home the kids have been living 2 weeks in this house which by the way is up for sale and no one reported them missing

tempting....based on the description of which house it sounds like youre referring too...they sure leave their garage open quite a lot...and weve walked by there plenty of times and there is no one out there in the front yard when their garage is left open for everyone to see what theyd like to come and steal...so if it was them...unfortunately they were asking for it....and looks like their carelessness cost them...at least no one was physically hurt
