Howdy fellow Tortosans (I guess)

I have seen all of the posts on here talking about that corner on the southeast corner of our entrance, and while its fun to not know what is going there and to hear all the speculation, I have to wonder what would go into to process of purchasing, or seeking a donation of that land to the city, or for the community itself?

With the fire station there it seems reasonable to suggest a city complex, perhaps a public pool would be nice, although they were pretty trashy up in the valley, or a work out park (with excersize stations) that could be a tool for the fire department also, connected to the trail system. Or it could be a community center, or a hundred other things that would be better if they were in our control, rather than a big shopping center.

Anyone think this is a bad idea?

Any suggestion of what else could go into that land?

Anyone have the legal or business experience to know the first steps in seeing what the processes involved there would be?

Thanks everyone for your thoughts!

i have no idea whats going to be there...as long as its an asset to the community thats all that matters to me...however i will address your comment about the fire station there....it is my understanding that it was only erected and is still operated out of substandard facilities because it is only temporary...and was put up solely so this area could be developed..whether they decide to put a permanant one up somewhere close would be nice to know also

Yeah, I think the guys said that the permanent one would be built on Hartman, somewhere south of Honeycutt. That is not the permanent location, but close!

And one of them used to play the bagpipes sometimes. I could hear that from my house. He hasn't been out in a long time though

Isn't the new fire station on Porter and Smith-Enke the one replacing the one here?? That's what I was told, but you know how rumors are, if you haven't heard at good one by 10AM start one of your own.

That is a huge station with heli-pad and every thing, it should be finished and occpied soonish.

I heard that Rancho Mirage was going to get the fire station we have, that they will get a permanent station. But you're right, so many rumors about what will be happening. But i like the idea of figuring out how we could get the land, but i doubt the city will let the land go. I just don't care what we get, as long as it's NOT a grocery store. really don't want anything there. I heard it's going to be office buildings...again, who knows.

the fire station that is on Porter is not zoned for us. I was told this by a friend that is a FF. the temp location by us is just temp. they have no idea yet where they will build a perm. location as of yet..

The vacant area is zoned as retail so a park, pool or what have you, prolly is not going there.

from what I can tell from the maps, it's Medium density residential, commercial and a small section "employment". The employment would leave out retail because in most places that has a dollar amount per hour/month attached to it. So it's still anyone's guess what is going in there!

I dont want to be over excited but I have some preliminary information back from the city already, I am waiting to get confirmation from them that I can post their feedback and questions for us here so we can at least dream about something there.

Basically the city has money to build more parks, and the desire to do so. I was advised that its going to be more like those commercial condos like most doctors offices are in now up in 'the valley'. At least that was the understanding that I got, so it wouldnt be a total eye sore from the sounds of it.

Tortosa was built with less open space than is called for by the city now, so that may even give us more leverage to get an additional park. At the least it seems to me that any commercial development there would be too close to the edge of the maximum city limits with the reservation backing up to the Tortosa community to justify it, and perhaps a land exchange somewhere more centrally located to the rest of town could be done as well.

One thing to think about, a park there is going to bring more traffic, lights, and noise. Are we prepared to ask for that in our community?

I will post any details I receive back asap here....THANKS EVERYONE

So I received this back...........

That is a good idea. I love more park space. Currently, the developer holding that parcel wants to build a commercial project there and the town does need more commercial outlets. We are actively looking for parcels of land to turn into active parks and have money to buy now.

My question, however, is would the community object to lighted ball fields there?

Any feedback to send back? I will wait until Friday to send a reply.

YIKES!! Lighted ball fields??? Do we REALLY need more ball fields?? Can't they think of anything else to do with park areas??

I personally would love to have a park/ballfield there! I have a small child and watch children if there was a big park that close; I would be in heaven I like the little tot lots, but a nice big park full of different things to do would be an assest to this community. I would see what the people who live right across from that area think about the lighted ballpark. They might not be as happy about all the noise and lights.

I would love to have a park that includes amenities for adults too. Right now there is only a tot park and we don't have children, so maybe a jogging trail and dog park would be great.

That was my general feeling, the small parks are not enough to bring the Tortosa community together as a unit. I was originally suggesting a work out park, perhaps with work out stations, or a dog park. I would be willing to have lights there and a park, of course Im over in Valencia also....so anyone over in those areas have input??

The other thing we might consider here is that if it does turn into coporate condos there, they usually dont have services, activity, or traffic past business hours. Most up the valley include small green belts and decent landscaping. We may find that utilizing these facilities when they are not in use by the tenants is a better way to serve our community.

Dunno....but anyone's feedback would be great to pass along to Marty.

We're in Bareclona and we have been wanting a bigger park in our community since before we moved in. While I agree that if they are office condos, the hours wouldn't be that bad, but I would love something we could use 24/7, not just when the businesses close. I really want some tennis courts and a nice walking trail, so Im in favor of having a community park there as opposed to it being commerical.

I think before we determine we would like a park there we should get more information concerning the catch-and-release pond and the park that accompanies it. That park has a large parcel at the end of Costa Del Sol. . . It back farther in the community and I believe is a larger area.

I don't live in the houses that border the commercial lot, but I wouldn't want ball fields that close to me. I think leaving it as offices would be OK as long as they are nice ones. A park wouldn't be bad, but we WILL have a bigger one than we have now - at least that is my understanding.

well, my house looks over that area, and i would NOT like big lights there becuase 2 of my daughters bedroom windows are RIGHT THERE and the light would be such a problem.

Thats why I didn't buy in glenwilde so close to the city park...

HOWEVER I think a park without the big field lights would be great
