At yesterday's ARC meeting, a question was asked on what steps we could take to the city, proposing to have Murphy Road extended to Casa Blanca.

With the new middle school opening this year, Wal-mart and also the new elementary school at the top of Honeycutt (Butterfiled Elementary), I believe what is already a headache to get through town will only get worse.  Having the extension of Murphy Road will eliminate all of this for Tortosa Resident.

Cindy from the HOA recommended that we work as a community and request to be put on the agenda at the next council meeting and propose the extension.  I, unfortunately, have no experience doing this and not quite sure how comfortable I would be doing this.  I am however more than willing to work side by side with someone and help prepare and research what is needed.

Is there anyone out there that has done this process before, either in Maricopa or another town?  Would you be interested taking the lead on this?

Cindy (HOA) has also volunteered to help us put together the proposal, presentation, etc. and will also plan to attend the council meeting with us when we are on the agenda.

Thanks for your consideration.  Please PM me or contact Cindy (HOA) if you are interested.

That runs thru the Gila Reservation os its prolly no good goin to the city.  Basically as soon as you go left on Murphy off of honeycutt you'll come to the Res in about 100 yards.

Pizzaking is correct. Two summers ago when Honeycutt was flooded and we were driving to Stanfield to get to Maricopa, Gila River threatened to impound the cars of anyone using that route. I have to admit we've risked it a couple of times when there were accidents on I-10. That road is a nightmare! Best of luck to anyone willing to take on the reservation!

I attended a city meeting after Honeycutt was washed out (before the bridge was built) and we had a 34 mile detour to get to 347. Discussion suggested the city/state offer to pave Murphy thru the res so we could eliminate the long trip and have better access after the flooding. It was explained that getting tribal permission was impossible because of the number of people (living and not) that have a stake in the land, and would have to be on board with it. As was mentioned...good luck with that!

not so sure about it becoming Rez land only 100 yards after you turn onto murphy...because that farm thats back there isnt on Rez land...its owned outright by someone from what ive heard from a neighbor who talks to a lot of folks about things like this...but it does eventually become rez land if you keep going

Take a left and drive down a little bit. On the right side you should see a big white sign saying "Entering Gila River Reservation - No Trespassing" or something to that extent unless its been taken down.

Wouldn't it take longer to go from 347 to casa blanca to murphy to home? maybe im thinking casa blanca is farther than it is, but im my head, if it's the road im thinking, it really won't save much time. at least not that i think of.

i really didn't think there was much of a problem going to town. i seldom have traffic coming or going, takes about 10 minutes to get to the 347, so i don't see murphy being a solution.

plus, it's mostly rez, like everyone said and unless all members agree to sell the land, it probably won't happen. it's not city land, so i highly doubt there's anything city council can do. but who knows, i guess anything can happen.

Not that it would be a solution to get into town, it would give us access to 347 alternatives. If you go east on Casa Blanca you hit I-10...rarely any traffic. Would be nice to use when there's a problem on 347, or to be able to completely avoid 347 on a regular basis.

I would rather see them just connect Smith-Enke to I-10. Casa Blanca Rd has really slow speed limits and that weird interchange at I-10. I know our neighbors on the Gila River Indian Community are receptive to the Smith-Enke option as it would benefit them as well as us here in Maricopa. http://www.azdot.gov/Highways/Valley_Freeways/Loop_202/South_Mountain/articles/PDF/111607EVTRIBUNE.pdf  I would think if they just were able to "improve" Murphy between Honeycutt and Smith-Enke, then punch Smith-Enke through to the I-10, we'd be sitting pretty.  I'm sure our wonderful government will get around to this within 40-60 years or so.
