Alert | Between the $4.30 a gallon gas and the $3.00 store brand bread and the ridiculous $85 a month HOA and not to mention another property tax increase, we are sinking quick. We are two year residences of Tortosa and Maricopa and have seen nothing but a decline in the community as well as the city and it doesn't look like that will change any time soon. I love my house and Tortosa, but it is too expensive to live here now. I thought we all moved here originally to have a more affordable lifestyle, however that has backfired and blew up in our faces! Maricopa is a dying town, seems like devolpers are backing out of projects in droves. I personally can't afford to wait it out for things to get better. It was nice while it lasted, but we are working on an exit plan and I wish you all luck keeping your heads above water.

Alert | | Why do you think that only Maricopa is affected by the poor economy?

Alert | I agree, it's not just Maricopa that's been hit. Its the entire Valley, the entire state and just about the entire country. Even if we didn't live here in maricopa, we'd still be paying $4.15 for gas and $3.00 for bread and $2.00 for eggs and all that. So, no, we're not even close to calling it quits here. We love our home, we love our neighborhood, we do love Maricopa. It's not Maricopa's fault for the decline in the housing market. Go to Phoenix, where stores are on the corner and within walking distances and you still see many homes for sale or in foreclosure, so the market is bad, whether there is stuff in the city or not.
I think everyone needs to realize, this will pass. Will it pass tomorrow or next year or even in 5 years? who knows. But it will pass. Every so often, the economy gets bad, then it gets back to being good. The housing market falls apart, then it gets great again. So everyone seriously needs to breathe and simply ride it out. I personally didn't buy our home with the intention of selling it anytime soon.
It seems those who are the ones who want to call it quits, all over, not just here, are those who really did buy their home to be nothing more than a flip/investment and now, they are stuck holding onto 1-2-10 homes that they can't sell for what they paid for. Those of us who truly bought our homes to live in and be here for awhile don't seem to be as upset over things...at least not the people we know. and again, this isn't just about Maricopa...my family in NYC and PA are dealing with it too. Friends in PA want to sell their home and they are dealing with their market too and not having people willing to pay what they paid.
Personally, im here in Maricopa, because i love my home and love my city. I pay $4 in gas because i do work in North Phoenix, but i love my job with the state. Maybe if i hated my home or hated my job, i'd feel differently, but i don't, so Im OK with things.
Now, am i happy we're paying $4 for gas, no. But i deal with it. we will get over this. Just give it time.

Alert | I didn't say Maricopa is the only place that has it bad Caveman, but why drive 70 or 80 miles round trip to work everyday when I can have it just as expensive closer to work? We pay more in property taxes then Ahwatukee and for what? No complaining here, it is what it is, but I am chosing to be poor much closer to work! It will take much longer for Maricopa to recover from this housing and economic mess then the immediate outlying cities of Phoenix. I will miss Tortosa, but I will not miss the 800 miles round trips my fiance and I make every week just for the privilege of going to work. Again, good luck to all of you and Maricopa in the future.

Alert | We are far from quitting. We are just being more practical. We traded in my car and got a Prius, which is saving us about $250+ a month. We make one BIG trip to wal-mart a month to stock up the pantry and a couple small trips to Frys if needed. We actually cut down our grocery bill about $100 shopping at wal-mart. Even thought i HATE wal-mart, its the only way right now. Sacrifices are never easy.

Alert | | Just wait until you try to sell your house. First you will learn that your house has decreased in value by about 50%. Then you will learn that even if you price in line with the foreclosures, it still won't sell. I can't remember the last time I saw a non-foreclosure house sell in our area of Tortosa. There have been vacant houses for sale for almost 2 years on our block. Good luck getting out.

Alert | | did anyone hear a week or so ago on the news that the new trend for people to get out of their homes is by burning them down themselves?....i guess when times get tough people go nuts! | | *formerly known as inyrfce2* Senior Member Posts: 797 Joined: Dec 2006

Alert | I feel your pain. Ive been in Copa since the first development in RED went up and here in Tortosa for over 2 years. Bout 5 years + or - total. I regret the move and am hoping that the market rebounds a bit in the next 3 years so I can bail. I dont like the direction the city is going and the costs. It was a gamble and I lost. Oh well. Next time around Im not jumping in a "work in progress" city. It may be good for some but not for me.
I want to enjoy life as much as possible and living in Copa is not allowing me to do that. Im not depressed or anything. I jsut know I would be happier elsewhere. Theres too many frustrations liked to Copa and I hope to not be dealing with them in the next few years. | | Pizzaking Wasnt a member 0 posts

Alert | | I'm enjoying it here more than I thought I would. I'd be happier if they jazzed up the roads a bit and finally opened a gym and some non-fast food/greasy spoon type restaurants. That will all come in time though, I'm sure. i think a lot of people ARE "calling it quits" though. I was driving in that little no-name neighborhood across from the grade school and there were so many "for sale by owner" signs that it curled my toes. And this was in addition to the numerous "bank owned" signs and homes that were just plain empty.

Alert | | I think people like the OP should have a black mark on their credit report for life, not just 7 years if they "walk away' from their homes. Good homeowners who are in it for the long haul with their neighbors shouldn't get the same treatment and those who give up so easily

Alert | I had to leave, left a couple of months ago. moved to Chandler, found a decent home, a little older but well maintained in a golf community. Very safe neighborhood, no teenagers hanging around my corner. HOA is about the same. I live right next to the tennis courts, golf course and the large pool ( for the same HOA fee) Food and gas prices are not really all that different but I am home in 12 minutes! let me repeat that 12 MINUTES!!!!! I can go home for lunch! I am close to everything here: malls, Target, Theaters, restaurants ... everything and multiple choices. and another amazing thing: I can actually sit outside on my patio and breathe!
