Just wondering if there is any one willing to share their experience or opinion on Horizon charter school? I don't know much about it and am trying to decide between it and Mountain Pointe.

I am waiting to see which schools we get into and make a determination from there.

My son went to Horizon from 1st grade through 5th grade, and is currently attneding Mt. Pt.  HS.  Horizon was not a particulary good experience for him, but I think it was more because the class sizes were large and my son neeeded a smaller environment than any problwms with the school itself.   I like the academic programs at Mt. Pt. but also realize all schools, have some problesm.  PM me if you want to know more.

I'm confused about your large size class comment.  My children go to Horizon Community Learning Center and their class sizes are quite low with their largest being 32 in English.

Horizon definitely isn't for everyone.  If you are investigating schools, talk to as many people as possible as opinions are like stars in the sky, there are many.

When my son attended, Horizon stated that there were (for example) teacher student rations of 12 to 1, but in reality the classes were grouped together for different subjects and the classes were not 12, more like 30 -32, which I think is large for one teacher to handle and for all students to get any individual attention.  I do not dislike Horizon and think there are many good things about it, such as parents who are active in their children's education, but it was not a good fit for my child.

Yeah you are right it depends on the class, but it's still a much better environment then a lot of places.

Good luck to you.

Where is Horizon located?

If you have an unobstructed view, about 20 miles

That is only in a couple of classes (for my kids) and why I send them there and not MUSD?  Can you say teacher control over classrooms, actual discipline in the school, a real zero tolerance policy, individualized curriculum for each of my children, a cohesive curriculum, an administration that actually wants parental involvement (not just 'yes men') and parents that are actually involved.  I'm going to stop because I keep thinking of more things...

Also since we are on numbers....the larger number at HCLC is the exception, I would hazard a guess that the '22-25' in MUSD is also the exception.

Well the lottery for the upcoming school year was tonight and my kids didn't get in. Especially since there was one ONE opening in most of the primary grades 1-4. I wonder if it is easier to get in as a pre-K. They seemed to have more openings, like 20 compared to one. I wished they could go there. It seems like a wonderful school, with a well established and proven program. Oh well, maybe next year.

Have you checked out Legacy Traditional School right here in Maricopa?

We got into Horizon but not sure if we will accept. Waiting to see what we hear from the other schools to make a determination. Plus, I have to get my ex to okay the decision. I wish we could have considered Legacy, but some of us are talking about High School. DaybyDay's kids are younger though, so that's probably who you sent the message to. The high school portion of Horizon had a lot of spaces for Freshmen.

Yes my children were trying to enter in the primary school K-5. there was like one opening in each of the grades, except for pre-K who had about 20 openings. It was pretty discouraging. Apparently, having so few openings isn't a norm- but, we will see.

Actually the ratio in the primary grades at Horizon is 20:1 in all grades 1-4.  Kindergarten is even lower, about 24:2.  Once you hit the intermediate school, it looks a lot like other schools, about 25:1.
