02/16/2008 12:36 AM Alert

The city council will vote on whether to spend $700,000.00 on ten more acres for a parking lot for the new Pacana  Park this Tuesday.  Recently opened, Pacana Park offers a beautiful man made lake, basketball courts, a large lit parking lot  and playing fields.  Additionally there are clean rest facilities, lights for nighttime use of the fields and Ramada's.

Problem: We have a stagnant tax base, thousands of homes for sale, hundreds in foreclosure and our politicians want to spend more money for a park that is brand new?? We have no industrial or commercial tax base to help with the tax  coffers. Can't we make do with the beautiful facilities we have and tighten the belt?   It appears that we may have cash flow problems. The State has a BILLION DOLLAR SHORTFALL. The state supplies us with money from the General Fund to run many of our essentials such as public schools. The City Council is suppose to be watching out for us. Where are their priorities? Why are we spending additional tax dollars we may need to get us through this recession?

Some of you in the community say spend the money . Do you don't even know what the financial outlook is for our city? Is that how you run your household budgets? More  deficit spending? Yes, we will need more open space in the future but can't we use all of the new school yards, tot lots and parks we already have?

Please quit charging our children's future and start paying some of the bills!

Let's USE OUR TAX DOLLARS WISELY!!!!!

P.S. When we have the money let's fix John Wayne Parkway first! It's a disgrace to the namesake!

Letsfixit has to post this nonsense in every forum apparently. Using your anti-community, selfish logic, how about we do away with medicare and social security so my tax dollars stop funding your pills and shuffle board classes? Afterall, I don't need medicare or social security.

There is a certain group on here that feels the need to nickle and dime everything the city does to the point of rediculousness. I'm shocked there hasn't been a probe into the cost of city letterhead or the cost of toilet paper at the city office. maybe someone can get on that.

Yes lets not do the park. I also agree that is a waste of our tax dollars. I was apalled to see that Smith is mostly responsible (planning) for this total mess that the city is in right now. All he knows how to plan is where to add the next sub-$100k housing development. No new roads. No better buildings... just cram everything into our terribly planned little community with no forethought. Seriously!

As far as I know, there is only one way across the railroad tracks. There have been emergencies and people say that we should double our police staffing to accomodate. That is bad planning. Obviously a RR overpass is the answer. Start building it!

The 4 lane highway is not adequate. The multitude of stop lights along 347 is stupid... build on-ramps instead. Who is dumb enough to put 5-6 stop lights on a highway? That is just asking to turn a 20 minute commute into town into 40-60 minutes. BAD PLANNING SMITH!

By the way, the other day it took me 50 minutes to get from Maricopa to Ray Road with no construction and no accidents. 45 minutes of that was the 347, caused by stoplight backups. Bad planning and bad stench has ruined this town.

Denna,
Don't you live at home with your mom and dad?

Do you have a job?

Do you know what taxes are? It's not that state between New Mexico and Louisianna.

Also, it's really pretty nonsensical to blame Anthony Smith for the lights along the 347 between Maricopa and the I-10.  Denna, you're forgetting about the fact that Gila River--not Maricopa--owns everything surrounding that part of the highway.  They own the property on which those on-ramps you're proposing would be built.  In other words, here you are blaming Maricopa planning for what has been done on a section of the highway that squarely falls into Gila River territory and is completely outside of Maricopa--i.e., a part of the highway that Maricopa has no direct control over whatsoever!!!

Furthermore, if you had read some of the responses that Anthony Smith has made to people who directly questioned him about this issue on the forum (or had for that matter taken the effort to either attend city council meetings or read what's out there about the issue), you'd know that there are ongoing sit-down sessions/negotiations between Maricopa, the ADOT, and Gila River--who, again, owns all of the land that changes would be made on--in order to deal with those very issues.

Also, I can't see how you didn't know about this before buying property out here.  I can understand that when you were looking out here it may have been at a time when the cow smell wasn't present (so you didn't know the extent of it until you got here), but how could you not have known that there is a reservation between Maricopa and the I-10??!!

YES FOR PARK EXPANSION!!! It is NOT A WASTE OF TAX DOLLARS, and Anthony Smith did not get us into any kind of mess. Dena I've read all your posts and you are incapable of understanding the process of civic planning and government processes. Please, before spouting forth all sorts of nonsense, do yourself and all of us a huge favor - EDUCATE YOURSELF on the process. If you are so upset with the conditions in Maricopa - why are you still here? Maricopa 10 years ago, heck even 5 years ago was a completely different picture. We have come along in huge ways and I cannot wait to see what we'll accomplish in the next 5 to 10 years!   You are SO NEGATIVE!

Hi Mr. Smith. Nice of you to join the forums to stick up for your points. It is nice to see a politician on here defending your views.

I am not negative.

The city smells. FACT

Nothing is happening for traffic except to make more of it. FACT

There is no planning, only secret deals between the city and Big Cow and Chicken which make it impossible for us to live in a clean city. People have to close their windows at night wasting valuable electricity and making them spend extra money on utilities in an already bad economy. Big Chicken has no conscience. They don't try to limit the smell with charcoal filters, restricted chicken hours, and dampening cloths.

Can you show me where any planning has gone into the roads here? All we keep hearing is "there is a study on that" or "they are working on it". Only nothing really gets done. Meanwhile you run for Mayor when you haven't even done any planning at all in your present planning job. One thing is for sure Mr Smith, you will bring more cows to Maricopa.

Yes to the park.  Please add a graffitti wall there.  All the little loser taggers can paint that wall, instead of EVERYWHERE else.  The park will give kids some place to hangout, seeing as their parents don't care to know where they are.

And to round the team of 'Most Wanted' in Maricopa to 5, I'll add:

Denna, if you want to ask Anthony Smith questions directly, why don't you go to the thread where he is asking for people's input/questions instead of posting them here?

Also, it doesn't really make a lot of sense to blame the city for 'Big Chicken' if the chicken farm you're referring to is on Ak-Chin land, and not on land owned by the city of Maricopa.  That would be exactly like me blaming you for what your neighbor puts in his yard.  Or the same as if you blamed the city for what happens on Gila River land--oh that's right, you did that in your last post.

Weren't you aware of the population of cows BEFORE you moved to Copa? I mean you do have a point about the smell, but who is the one who saw the cows and still moved here? Did you think that they were a different breed and that they wouldn't smell?

Although LetsFixIt is correct that our community has less money to spend than we had hoped for, I do not think it is prudent to wait on much needed community ammenties such as the park expansion. There is never enough to address all of a community's needs; when we had plenty of money coming in, it was difficult, at best to keep up with the growth. Now that we have slowed down, we stilll need the park, a city hall that is not a "hell hole" and fire trap, and other needs. Denna, would have us spend millions of dollars on on ramps on land we do not own, cannot own and cannot control. Yes traffic is a major issue, but that does not mean we should not expand the park. All the money in the world would not change the traffic situation.
All the money in the world yesterday would not have changed the traffic situation. What needs to occur is the continuing ongoing discussions with the Gila River community. In this way, eventually they may be convinced to widen the road going through their property, and make some other changes. In the mean time, Denna, you need to learn to do your ressearch beforehand. You obviously were not aware that Maricopa has decades of agriculture as a history (which means things have an odor). You obviously make comments about one of Mayorial candidates without bothering to find out if they are true or not. It is obvious that you just like to post for the sake of seeing your name here, as you dod not do any work to determine if what you are posting has any truth to it.

Dena -

I'm not the politician you are referring to - the last name just happens to be a coincidence. Again, you are quick to make assumptions without doing the research or stopping to think.

And for the record, yes -you are negative.

I have not seen a single person who is more negative on this forum--and there are some pretty negative people on here. Nor have I seen anyone who is so willing to slander/make negative comments about others while doing nothing to research the issues and get their facts straight first. Sitting in front of your computer and letting accusations fly without making that effort (or even making the effort to truly think through the issue before posting) is the easy--but incredibly lazy--thing to do.

I think that an addition to the park would be a good investment because the kids do need something to do and somewhere to hang out. We don't have a rec center, we don't have any arcades, something needs to be done to make sure we keep our kids out of trouble and give them an alternative to doing other things that could have negative effects on their lives.

On the other hand that is a lot of money to be spending but that's how everything is in life. We are always going to be spending money, and I think spending it for the better of the youth is a wonderful "expense."

it's called being a parent. Having them all hangout at a park is fine. Usually when you get too many in the same place.... trouble is soon to follow.

I am not against the park project, I am just against the way it was done or seems to have been done. We spent thousands of dollars on Polls and studies that told us that the Park we have would be ok for the next 4 years of growth... Guess what...it turns out that it isn't. That's fine...

I just want to know if the deal with the church was made before the church bought the land (which is a problem for me) or after they bought the land (couldn't have been. Because the church doesn't OWN it now. Which would have been alright.)

Just doing it one day at a time. Change is good and it should be looked upon as an improvment! not a problem.
