To the early Roman Empire, Christianity was, for centuries, a dangerous cult. With that in mind, when does a cult become an accepted religion? Is it numbers, government approval, longevity or some other factor?

When it has nothing to do with drinking goat's blood and chanting in the moonlight.

If you are in that group, then its a religion.

If you are on the outside looking in, then its a cult or sect, depending on how different it is from your own beliefs.

Technically, there is no difference.

Definintion of "Cult"
S: (n) cult (followers of an exclusive system of religious beliefs and practices)
S: (n) cult (followers of an unorthodox, extremist, or false religion or sect who often live outside of conventional society under the direction of a charismatic leader)
S: (n) cult (a religion or sect that is generally considered to be unorthodox, extremist, or false) "it was a satanic cult"
S: (n) cult, cultus, religious cult (a system of religious beliefs and rituals) "devoted to the cultus of the Blessed Virgin"

I think we already qualify as one. We're practically on an island separated from civilization by about 15 miles on all sides. Practically only one way in or out. If you don't know the rules of engagement you get taken out on the highway to heaven (347) and all of our houses look the same, like in a compound.
