 Alert | I have a 2 year old (approx) Cocker Spaniel, and by most regards he is a very good dog... except that I can't seem to break him of this nasty habit of "marking" things in my house (my bed, the wall, the toilet...)
Each time I find a new spot it's not a LOT of urine, so I don't think it's just him not being able to hold it any more. That brings me to another point... I can't seem to get him to tell me when he wants/needs to go out, either. If I am already letting him out he will scratch on the door if I don't open it fast enough, but he doesn't know to go there if he has to "go".
Any advice on the training or how to get him to stop marking "his" territory? | | | |

Alert | | He is fixed. I got him about a year ago from the Arizona Humane Society, so he was already neutered when I got him. We had problems with "accidents" in our old house, but when we moved to the new one I was hoping they would stop, since he wouldn't have a designating peeing area anymore (in the old house it was the carpet in my office!!!) | | | |

Alert | 2 words for you, Belly Band!! He'll "mark" once, maybe twide with it on and realize it's not as much fun as he thought it would be.
Do a search on "belly band for dogs". Several of the places that sell these are rescue and the proceeds go to help cover costs. | |

Alert | | Maybe I will market a set of little flags like they use for landscaping to mark the location of sprinklers. You would give them to your dog like chew toys. They would say "my territory" and come in different colors for families of multiple dogs. Alert | Um, no... matmo. Different deal. Think of a belly band as a halter top for male dogs except lower.

Alert | | The buddy bands are great! alot of breeders also use them to prevent a dog from getting a female dog... also for potty training.. they are soo good.. I know a girl online who sells them to benefit the boston terrier rescue... pm me if you want her info.. if you are crafty they are easy to make.. | | | |

Alert | I used them with my dog and it worked wonders! He did figure out that if he laid on his side, stretched out his back legs and wiggled around on the bed he could sometimes get it off but he only did that at night when laying next to me on the bed so I knew what he was doing and would stop him.
A friend uses one on her 12.5 year old Ridgeback for his incontinence problem and he doesn't bother with it at all. | |
