Alert | <img src='http://www.85239.com/desktopmodules/ntforums/images/emoticons/w00t.gif' height='20' width='20' border='0' title='w00t' align='absmiddle'> Hi there!!
I posted here quite a long time ago expressing my negativity and regrets about moving to Maricopa and they were not recieved very well, which is an understatement. Since then, I have not posted in fear of being alienated, however I've been actively reading posts and seeing the negativity on the forum and how many people really ARE miserable. My husband and I have been going to the city council meetings and I must say, compared to the number of people on this forum that complain about the many aspects of maricopa that make us want to leave, i.e. cow smell, the 347, lack of business, competition from new build homes, etc etc, the lack of people at these meetings was very disappointing!!! We HAVe a chance to make a difference is what I am saying and if you want change, you need to attend meetings, write letters, etc. Bitching about stuff on a forum, while a good way to vent, only brings more negativity, and does not bring about the change we need (I learned this the hard way!)
To all of you that really DO like it here, kudos to you! I mean that genuinely. I think one should love a place they live and if you are happy then, that's great. For many of us that aren't (and for good reasons), we need to voice these opinions at meetings and start taking some action and not just sit around and hope that the mayor gets voted out and that we have a new city council and that this and that store will come by 2009...take some action. Yes, it's true that all cities do go through growing pains, as said in many of these posts, but they also don't have to face challenges that are unique to maricopa. Some of these we have control over and some we don't.
Yeah, I'm upset that I already lost 40k on my home in 6 months. Yeah, I'm upset that my husband can't leave for work to drive on the 347 without me worrying about him getting killed. Yes, I am angered that the smell here IS (despite what others say) bad for our health, but instead of just venting about in on here, let's work on the stuff we can change and turn our anger or resentment into some advocacy and make change happen here!
Thanks for listening! | | | |

Alert | Can you share with us some of the positive things you've encountered by attending the meetings? How do you feel you are able to make an impact. I am not asking in a condescending way, but a genuinely curious and sincere way. Do you feel the mayor should be impeached? On whatever ballot, I would just vote for anyone who wasn't in the previous counsel or government. That would be a safe bet.
I would also propose someone start looking for a way to drive the "big cattle" men out of town. They are probably very hooked up with the local government so we'll probably have to look for questionable kick backs or side dealings in order to make it happen. It's time the yuppies make a stand. It's our Maricopa now!!!

Alert | Why can you not do all these things.
You seem to have all the answer and are more than willing to point out all the problems that need to be solve.
How many meetings have you been to that you have spoken up and voiced your opinion with what you've been saying on the forum here for at least the last week or so?
How many letters have you written asking for the things to be changed with the different agencies that control them?
It has always been our Maricopa....so where is your stand? | | Senior Member Posts: 4625 Joined: Feb 2006

Alert | Don't live in a place you don't like. I did that... I moved my family to Northern California for 6 years. We hated it. The people were cold and mean. The whole place just... well.... sucked. We chose to move here and love it. I would not see my brother liking it here, but we do. In NorCal, I almost lost my wife and family because we hated it so much. Don't do that. Find a place that you like and move there. There is no perfect place for everyone. That is part of being an adult.
That is my best advise for anyone. | | Let X=X

Alert | | I wish I could move but I am 40k upside down in equity in only 6 months so i have no choice but to stay until the market picks up.. don't have 40k to pay out of pocket and part of me wants to stay because I have a feeling things WILL pick up and I want to be here when maricopa takes off and acquires the growth we are all waiting for.

Denna, if you moved by Sky Harbor would you petition that the airport be shut down because it is too noisy for you?
FYI Denna, the "Big Cattle" men have been out in Maricopa (away from you and the rest of us) for a really long time. Remember, you were the one who chose to move next to them. Would it be okay if the feed lot owners asked us to move?

Alert | Or you only get 2 hours to spend with family before the wife has to go to bed and the daughter does home work and you have to watch the baby.
It's very hard to attend.
Bad for me .. good for the council and HOA's! | | Just doing it one day at a time. Change is good and it should be looked upon as an improvment! not a problem. ______________________________________ *************************************** San Diego Super Chargers! GO!!! Alert | | I totally agree... city council time is very difficult to attend for most working folks.. they should make it later...maybe we can write letters even if we can;t be at the council meetings, and yes, I hate HOA's also. This is my first house and I almost feel like I don't have a house because of all the stipulations they set forth. Makes me feel like the HOA owns my house ;(

Alert | Once elected Mayor I will have all Maricopus Complainus rounded up and deported to Mexico. Then they will see how good they have it here in Maricopa.

Alert | Sinbad, that sounds just like MY house! Except, whiddle it down to one hour!
I have lived here 5 and a half years and have seen many changes. It took over a year for the Basha's to come after we got here. I have mixed feelings about Maricopa. I'm glad that we found a home we could afford on one income, but I do feel sorry for all the citizens who have lived here their whole lives and have had to watch it change into a town they didn't want. I know many people who have lived here for a very long time and when I talk to them I actually feel a little sad that I had something to do with all the changes here in 'their town'. However, that is life. Change happens everywhere whether we like it or not. Towns have to grow. It also saddens me to hear people say how frustrated they are that 'big businesses' haven't moved here yet, or that they want to bulldoze downtown Maricopa and start over. Or that we should get rid of the dairy. Farmers can't just pick up and move their livelyhood. It's just not right to expect that of them. It stinks sometimes, and it probably didn't stink when all of us looked at the model homes during the daytime, but that's just something we have to overlook. They have been here for a very long time and actually, one of them did get bought out. It was just a few miles west of town on the south side of 238. My friends are farmers behind Cobblestone Farms and they have trespassers frequently. I feel sorry for them. They moved here TO BE farmers. Anyway, I don't mean to be sappy but just consider others' feelings when complaining about them.
There used to be acres and acres of pecan trees along Smith Enke all the way from Porter to 347. It's hard to remember. It's kind of crazy that the Villages just buit AROUND the only house that was there with the pecan trees. | | Despite All My Rage I Am Still Just A Rat In A Cage

Alert | For all you people that state if you don't like it.. leave.... I think half the town would be gone but since the majority of people are upside down they can't. I think people are to the point, if the market somewhat picks up and they can "Break Even" there going to get out of here.
As far as the city council goes, if they can't change the time of the meetings, why can't they record them and post them on the city site to watch?
There is this awesome new technology called "YOUTUBE" I think they should look it up....

Alert | City Council agenda/packets can be picked up by anyone who wants one prior to the meetings. The meeting minutes are also available to anyone who wishes to get them.
http://cityofmaricopa.net/city_clerk/cityclerk2007.html
The work session starts at 6pm but the actual "meeting" does not start until 7pm. I'd assume most 9-5ers or folks w/ earlier shifts are home from work by then (given that 347 is running fairly smoothly) & if it's a priority to attend, then you will. Our family finds them difficult to attend as well because of my work schedule, but it's very important to my husband, so we make accommodations for him the Tuesday nights that the meetings are scheduled. The meetings are scheduled a year in advance, so planning for them can be as easy or as hard as you want to make it for yourself and your family.

Alert | | I may be mistaken, but aren't some of these issues (depressed home prices, school issues) happening all over and not only in Maricopa? Why are we looking at Maricopa as some kind of social experiment or barometer compared to any other area? There are many cities in which the real estate market as turned upside down (not just in Maricopa and certainly not just in Arizona). Just my thoughts...these same issues/concerns are happening everywhere and not just here.
