Alert | | I drive the speed limit in Maricopa as well. I don't mind so much the people that want to go faster it's the stunts that people pull. People that pull up next to me and then don't pass, or hover in my blind spot, people that wait until the last second to pass (Smith-Enke east where it narrows to two lanes), pulling up right on my bumper when I slow down for a speed limit change, etc. | | Joined: Jul 2005

I try to stick to the speed limit myself stinky. 35 MPH is a tough egg to crack though. I find myself creeping up with traffic. Leaving town in the morning is the worst. Traffic is usually doing 50 by the time we are passing Frys. Don't even ask how fast coming up to RED at 5:15AM.

Less likely to get a ticket outside of town. No MPD gestapo enforcing poorly set limits. | | Joined: Jul 2005

Alert | I meant, does it feel wrong to follow the speed limit in town and then speeding on the highway? And if yes, what makes it different to you? I'm not looking to start a special olympics battle here. Just curious what your thoughts are.
I personally go a bit faster on the highway because I normally flow with traffic. In town, I try to go flower because it's where I live.

Alert | I do 70-75mph down the 347... In town, I do the posted limit... not because I'm afraid of a ticket or anything.. it's just because the risk of interaction with pedestrians is much greater in town than on the open road... I'm one of those rare breeds who still believe that it's my duty as a licensed driver to drive defensively and keep a constant watch for pedestrians.. not the other way around...

Alert | | alanf it is far safer for someone to speed on properly constructed highways than it is on smaller roads and side streets.

Alert | I know that we have had the discussion over and over before about speed being the contributing factor in accidents. Of course, to some degree it is. I you had zero speed you would never run into anything. However, other things could run into you.
The posted speed limit is arbitrary. A alert driver in a newer, well maintained car travelling fifteen miles over the speed limit is probably safer than the guy who's plugging along at the speed limit in a 1983 Plymouth reliant with excessively worn, out of balance tires, front end out of alignment, brakes in disrepair, etc. I see these cars on the road every day. Many of them are doing things, i.e., following too close, that I wouldn't do in my new car with ABS, electronic stability control, and all of the other advanced technology designed to help avoid an accident.
My guess is that the speed limit is designed for the least common denominator. As such, while it is illegal to exceed the posted speed limit, it's not necessarily unsafe. | | Stupid should hurt!

Alert | | How dare you single me out like that! I have just as much right to speed as you. Besides, I'm old and can't see the traffic signs. I'll bet you don't even have to use the Braille at the ATMs! <img src='http://www.85239.com/desktopmodules/ntforums/images/emoticons/smile.gif' height='20' width='20' border='0' title='Smile' align='absmiddle'> <img src='http://www.85239.com/desktopmodules/ntforums/images/emoticons/tongue.gif' height='20' width='20' border='0' title='Tongue' align='absmiddle'>

Alert | | A few years ago the head of the New Jersey state police got in a lot of trouble when he told a reporter that people who drove the speed limit on the Jersey Turnpike were a danger to everyone. He went on to say that people should drive with the faster flow of traffic. A few days later he was forced to retract his statement and order his troopers to enforce the posted limits. Sometimes slower is not safer.
