Ok, so I need the following items, which I need advice on:

1: Wireless router: I currently have a netgear, but with one wired computer, a voip adapter, and two laptops tapping into it, I find that I continuously have problems connecting wirelessly and have to reboot the router. I was considering running the voip through that router only, and getting a new router, to run my computers.

Any advice on what router to get that is affordable? This router would also support my wireless Xbox live connection, at that time, all the computers would be off though.

2: External HD: I touched on this in the other topic already. I need to backup business data, and some personal data, periodically. It does not need to be wireless since cost is an issue. I would expect I would not need any more than 50 to 100 gigs of storage. Any recommendations here, along with a good backup program, would be appreciated.

Thank you for your time.

Are you using the highest speed wireless available by netgear? Running all that bad on a higher end "best buy" router.

As for storage, go to Best Buy or check PC Club for sales, I bought a 250GB external USB drive for about $99 over 8 months ago. There a good deals, you just have to look hard. Oh yeah, check out the Frye's Electronics flyer as well.

stogieman,

Thank you for the advice. I am using Maricopa Broadband, though I never get the advertised speed (They are working on it.), I am using a cheaper router by Netgear. The Best buy special would probably be a good way of describing it. So no, I am not using their fastest, is that what you recommend? If I am supposed to be pulling 7 to 8 mbs down, then how much should I invest in a router?

I had the same problem with all of the Netgear routers I tried. I think Sam's Club still has a Linksys WRT54-GS for $60, IIRC. I run that with DD-WRT firmware and have no trouble with it, no matter what wireless card I connect to it.

I'd suggest this setup:

Seagate 250GB HD
External USB Enclosure
Acronis TrueImage

TrueImage also comes in a downloadable version, saves a few bucks.

I have the same Linksys router that Jason does and I am happy with it. My computers are about 70 feet apart, and I rarely have a connectivity issue. I use the USB adaptor in one of them and a NIC card in the other. I use the wireless interface in my laptor and it always comes right up. They do have a game adaptor that runs around $99 bucks that would take care of your Xbox.

Stupid should hurt!

I have tried netgear and a few friends at work have tried them and not one of us has had any luck with them. We all for the most part went with Linksys WTG-54 (I think that's them) wireless 4 port routers. At home when I had mine connected I had 2 PC's, both my wireless printers and my VOIP phone from work all connected and had no problems with any of the hardware. I have since moved on to Qwest and they have there own wireless 4 port router and still with the same setups I have no problems at all. I would move away from netgear

I have the Netgear with MMO bost.. I have some problems ... but nothing that is making me want to change them out.

In Maricopa it's hard to find out if it's your router or the connection from your carrier...

Just doing it one day at a time. Change is good and it should be looked upon as an improvment! not a problem.

Shannon-

If you can find a 2wire 270 HG online I can help you configure it properly to use. This is one of the few power controlloable and channel controllable intelligent gateways there is.

I am 75 feet from my router and get full signal strength.

I cant find any online. Maybe go to craigslist and post that you are looking for one?

Ditto on the Linksys. I have the same model as Jason, and I haven't had any problems. If you have any questions about range, just look for available wireless networks in your neighborhood. There's always at least one open "linksys"!

As for backup, you may want to consider a RAID 1 setup. This is probably overkill, but if you're gong to be backing up business data it's better not to take chances.

I agree, I cannot take chances. Are we allowed to ask if people have items for sale in this forum?

Well, a good router, straight external HD, or the casing to make one, as Jason mentioned, and that about does it. I wll go new if I have to, but if someone has this stuff laying around I would rather give them some money, get it off their hands, and get a discount.

Also, I may need to get a 75 ft network cable. My Xbox connection is good via the wireless adapter, but it could be even better if I run it straight, which would require 75 ft. My 50 ft one is just a bit short.

SHannon dont waste your money on a 75 foot enet cable. Your wireless connection will be just fine as soon as you upgrade yourr outer. I Can see if I can find you a 2wire 270 and configure it for you. I think the cost is like 65 bucks though. BUT I can say this. You can boost the power on this one which makes for a stronger signal. Lemme know
