Alert | On Smith-Enke between Province and the dirt road? Why does it inexplicably go up to 45? Why is the one lane in each direction section 35 but Porter, which is also one lane in each direction, is 45? Why does it go 45->35->45? Why doesn't it drop down because of construction? Why doesn't it drop down because of a dirt road? Why is there no posted limit going west from the dirt section of the road?
I thought speed limits were all about safety. So why are they so vague and ambiguous in Maricopa?
This is an honest question, so don't flame me. <img src='http://www.85239.com/desktopmodules/ntforums/images/emoticons/biggrin.gif' height='20' width='20' border='0' title='Big Grin' align='absmiddle'> | | Joined: Jul 2005

Alert | I assumed that the merged section was 35 because it changes to one lane and curves a little and people may have trouble navigating that bend at a higher speed. Can't even guess on your other questions.

Alert | | No ticket, but then, I don't want one either. I might understand if they put up a curve sign and made that 35, but they've got it 35 all the way from Province to Porter. Then Porter is 45 and it is one lane in each direction. | | Joined: Jul 2005

Alert | | They do it because they know most people don't do the speed limit anyways, so why even bother. I think they just pull random numbers out of their butt!

This court finds you guilty of the crime of Questioning the Wisdom of the Traffic Authorities. This is a very serious charge! However, this court also finds that you were acting in the best interests of the community, and shall henceforth apply leniency to your sentence.
I hereby sentence you to 4 days' confinement in the Right Lane Jail of Highway 347. During this period of time, you are also prohibited from passing other drivers, employing a middle finger in the general direction of others, and entering the Westbound I-10 left-turn lane at a point further east than the 45 mile-per-hour speed limit sign.
*bang, bang*
Court is adjourned. | | | |

This is actually a matter for the Public Works. They control speed limits and traffic flow. Contact Brent Billingsly.
Now Jasons topic is a bit off. He really isn't asking what is the speed limit. It's obvious he knows, he read the signs. He really wants to know how the city determines what speeds are placed where. One tool is the Small Area Transportation Study, located on the cities website. It defines speed limits based on roadway size, traffic flow, right of way etc. Now how the City does or doesn't follow these guidelines would be determined by the Public Works Department.

OK, so I know what the speed limit legally is, but I want to know what they meant it to be. They can't possibly have meant it to be 45 in one direction and 25 in the other. Where the 45 direction has construction and the 25 doesn't. Does that make ANY sense to you? | | Joined: Jul 2005

Alert | I think the reasoning is dumb and confusing. The transportation study thinks 45 is too fast, and I think most people think 35 is too slow. Split the different and make it 40 throughout the major arteries, unless there is a reason for it, like a curve. Then there is no guessing game and you don't forget to change your speed every ten feet.
And I know there has been studies that confirm that varying speeds cause accidents. I know because we have used them in trial.
