 Alert | Looks like things may be looking up. Smith Enke straight to the I-10 and a widening of I-10. Maybe they'll turn 347 into a freeway too. Contrary to popular beief the problem isn't the GRIC.

Alert | Good read... thanks for posting! It was nice to see the GRIC are not unreasonable and uncaring as they have been made out to be.
The article mentions the importance of getting the 347 on ADOTs radar and implores residents to contact officials in order to do just that. Rather than complaing on this website, let's all spend the time contacting the people who may be able to help fix it - ADOT, state representatives and even the governor's office. | | | |

Up until now there has been no incentive for GRIC to negotiate. GRIC has publicly indicated it wants more exits on I-10 where it crosses tribal lands. This will allow the tribe to develop more of their land - for commercial, industrial and agriculture ventures that otherwise would not make sense economically without access. They know ADOT and the Feds will not put in the on/off ramps without something on the table. GRIC is holding four aces - they can ask for X number of exits (about $20 million each paid for by ADOT/Fed) in exchange for the easement for the additional lanes. And I bet a stipend thrown in to boot!
If it were me, that's what I'd hold out for. | |

While it's encouraging, the article mentions a planned interchange at Seed Farm Road for access to their government facility and the Sacaton Hospital, which is east of I-10. It leaves out explicit mention of paving Seed Farm west of the freeway (where it is currently dirt) and linking it with Smith-Enke. If they decide to permit that westwars expansion also, that would be a great alternative for times when 347 is closed. But it would take some work.
For starters, Seed Farm and Smith-Enke don't actually meet at the moment. They come pretty close, but they'd have to actually be linked in the future. Then there's the complexity of having to straighten out what is presently a jumble of dirt roads near the old Internment Camp, about 4 and a half miles west of I-10 along the Seed Farm alignment. There are numerous farm plots out there as well as the historic remnants of the Camp. Some land would have to be carved out in order to pave a street of decent size through that area and wind it around the little hills.
This isn't unmanageable, but it's just another thing to hold things up if GRIC ever lets this go through. They've got every reason in the world to push it through right now, and if they are crafty they'll do just that. The sooner they allow I-10 to be widened, the sooner they can lay down some commercial areas...and by the time those are ready to go, the economy will have rebounded and they'll be laughing all the way to the bank. ;-) | | | |
