Alert | I read the article on the signage blindness the city will be experiencing during the holidays. I have to agree with Mr. Kolman in that they didn't think this through.
If they are turning a blind eye to businesses who will be violating sign law, then they will be condoning the law breaking, yet NP's and churches will be held to the same law? This sends a very bad message about what the City is all about. I read the commentary after the article as well, as it seems that the sentiment is common that there are only so many groceries and dentists to visit, what do we need dozens of unecessary sandwich boards for???
The sign law needs to be revamped to equitably include a fair solution for everyone, and not make it look like the City is catering to business and builders by ignoring their law violations.

Alert | I think it's all about them wanting the NP's and Church's to give up some money for the BL. Only people with a BL can post signs and crap? That's just ignorant. NP's and Church's shoud be excluded from that part of the REG's for this time period.
How are you going to know about the Church Xmas functions if they can't post signs?

Alert | Totally agree, sinbad. I can't find those things here either. Same argument, people have to shop outside the city and we are not going to be able to rush the growth.
As for the BL's c'mon they're 50 bucks, what church or NP can't afford that? I think it's more than that--
The city needs to make it an equitable "blind eye" toward everyone, or not at all. Encouraging law breaking for specific groups is what it boils down to, and I believe there is a name for that too-------
Way to go, City of Maricopa!

Alert | | The message the city is sending is that builders are untouchable, businesses can break current ordinance without fines, but NP's and churches are simply not recognized as a contrutors to the community, and are cracked down on if they raise a piece of carboard stating their existence.

Would you spend your money to open a retail store in Maricopa?
A city whose leadership is too busy pushing costly annexation and airport/airpark projects to recognize that ground transportation problems (one highway in and out of the city, bridgeless Honeycutt/Santa Rosa Wash, inadequate traffic control signals, etc., etc.) are literally strangling their city.
Reminds me of Nero, the Emperor of Rome. History books indicate he fiddled away his time on insignificant matters while the city of Rome burned to the ground.
I love Maricopa and hate saying negative things about it. But, I'm also a realist and accept Maricopa as it literally is. I think we should deal with it accordingly.

Alert | | Here's the true irony in the whole situation... Christmas is about the birth of the Baby Jesus... like it or not... the city is saying that businesses can have relaxed signage, but the churches that celebrate the reason for the season can't. I read the article, and it says that Helsel is working on it, but if it doesn't happen for the churches too, it will be a sad ending to a sad story. Christmas isn't about retail sales, though to many businesses, it keeps them afloat. Churches need the income too. If no one knows where the churches are, people will go elsewhere, like OUT of Maricopa. | | Yes, that's really my name

Um, last time I checked CHRISTmas is about the birth of Jesus. Christmas TREES come from an old pagan holiday in Sweden/Norway. | | "My favorite health club is the International House of Pancakes" -- Lewis Black

Alert | I normally don't post on the forum but your statement about pouring money into "rich pastor's pockets" just called for a reply. For your information the majority of pastors in this town work a full time job outside the church and pastor the church for little to sometimes no money. They do this because they have felt the call of God on their lives not the call of money. Get to know some of the pastors before you pass judgement. Whether you like it or not I will be praying that God works on your heart like he did mine as I used to be an atheist that did not believe in God either. He blessed me so much that I just have to share His good news about that He loves you so much that He sent His only Son to die for you.
