Alert | | I fell witness to the darndest thing! My daughter and I were on our way back into the Copa the other night, and I was in the left lane following a newer Honda Accord. We were traveling approx. 70MPH at the lights outside the stone quarry when the Honda drove straight off the highway, down a drop off, and into the dirt in the median. The Accord bottomed out, was fishtailing nearly out of control, so I naturally slowed a bit and the driver cut right back out infront of me causing me to slam on brakes along with everyone behind me. I did not know if they were on the cell, drunk, or just plain stupid! He needed to just stay on the side until the lane was clear or he regained some sense if he has any!!! Can you say crazy?! | | Live every day as if it were your last and smile!

Alert | | You are right! I did not give that a thought! You have to have eyes behind your head out there on the roadways especially the 347! | | Live every day as if it were your last and smile!

Alert | There are other possibilities. Many medical conditions can cause people to lose control on the road. Hypoglycemia, hyperglycemia, seizure, etc including the falling asleep, can result in losing control behind the wheel. Narcolepsy, brain tumor, blackout, . . . .
Give people the benefit of the doubt, by all means come to someone's aid should they actually come to a stop, instead of lashing out and calling people names without having all the facts. | | Formerly known as *werunohu* !!

Alert | | No doubt, however, under such conditions I would think that people would take better care of their conditions and not put anyone else in harms way! You are BTW talking to someone who has medical conditions seizure disorder, and I know what can trigger them and I take very good care as not to have such things occur putting myself or others in danger! If a medical condition did cause this person to loose control it is too bad they did not take the time to stay off the road to regain their control or get some help! Had they come to a stop I would have celled for help for them, instead they shot back out into traffic again putting others at risk! | | Live every day as if it were your last and smile!

Alert | | Wow, lucky you. Just think that if you were not going 15 MPH over the speed limit, or following so closely, you would not have had to slam on the brakes. Hope your daughter doesn't pick up those bad habits. REALLY, 70 MPH through a signal?

Could be a brand new condition.

There's nothing magical about 70 that would have made that impossible to avoid. Just follow the appropriate 2-3 seconds and it would have been avoidable at 70, 80, 90, 100, etc. It is not Colgate's fault the driver cut back in at a significantly lower speed causing the braking maneuver. It could have easily happened at 55 MPH.
At night there is almost no one coming out of the gravel place, which means the light won't change, which means 70 is not unsafe through there. I really wish we had digital speed limit signs that react to the situation. | | Joined: Jul 2005

Alert | | Right on Jason! No, I was going fast throught there, don't do it during the day though! Jason is right even at 55 MPH I would have put the brakes on! I was already doing about 55-60 once I saw him go off the edge and into the median due to the fact I did not know what was happening to his car and I still had to slam my brakes on as he drove back onto the roadway! | | Live every day as if it were your last and smile!
