Alert | I doubt too many of you know about it, but there is a public meeting in Casa Grande tonight, being hosted by ADOT to discuss planning for a proposed I-10 bypass. This might be worth paying attention to. ADOT and the Maricopa Association of Governments have been working on their own corridor plans and at some time in the future the two will get together an marry the two and finalize the plans and alignments.
The part of this that worries me is that the current plans show the freeway coming through the middle of Thunderbird Farms South. While this is still very preliminary, the planning process shown on the ADOT website follows a sequence where ADOT and the cities draw up a preliminary plan, meet with the developers in the areas, redraw the plans, then meet with the public. The current proposal takes the freeway through a large number of existing homes while carefully avoiding large open spaces owned by big developers. The big corporations with the most money will decide where to put the freeways at the expense of the folks who are already established.
Yes, I am sounding the alarm early. Early is the best time to be able to influence the planning. The further along they get into the process without involving the rest of us, the more likely it will be that local citizens won't get much word on outcome.
The meeting will start at 5:30.

Alert | wouldn't you know it but the "C" route looks like it goes thru parts of hidden valley.
Thank God I moved out of there. | | Brains, nerve and beauty all in one package! A win win for the Republicans!

Alert | | As it stands, my property is protected by environmental concerns for the Desert Sonoran Natl Monument as the C route skirts the Monument, although I would be between the C route and I-8. That C route is going to cut thru some very pretty and desolate areas on my side of the Palo Verde Mountains. | | Brains, nerve and beauty all in one package! A win win for the Republicans!

Alert | Yep, I went. There have been two changes to the map since the one that is up on the website. This is just a feasibility study at this time, but I would bet money that it will turn into an approved plan before too long. The new ADOT plan for hidden valley now takes a route that more closely follows the new power lines. and loops just south of T-bird farms to ultimately align with Val Vista at the 347. None of this is final. The Maricopa Association of Governments gets some input into the actual alignment, and the study they have been working on has the freeway coming noth of the Del Mar property and then diagonally through T-bird farms to Val Vista. I don't have any dates for public meetings with MAG yet, but I'll post them when they announce them.

Alert | I would suggest getting in touch with Mr. Dale Buskirk of ADOT to look at the most recent study maps. I told him I was disappointed that they can't seem to keep the website updated. Mr. Buskirk actually did a great job of presenting the charter - to study the need and feasibility of a new roadway from west of Phoenix to east of Tucson. The study charter specifies that they are to look for new routes, and not use existing roads. There was an interesting turnout. I would say that there were about 40 people there, and most asked questions during the open question and answer session. Several people came from as far away as Mammoth to talk about preservation of the Aravipa Canyon and San Pedro valley areas. There were even concerns that this bypass is part of the North American Union, and will be part of the Canamex highway used to transport goods between Mexico and Canada. This study isn't associated in any way with those efforts, but I can see where this project could be partnered to those other efforts. For the most part, the comments from the public echoed my own sentiments - that landowners need to be included very early in the process when somebody is looking to put a freeway through their yard. One lady said that speculation about the actual alignment caused a developer to pull out of escrow on her $4 mil land deal. I have concerns that even if the freeway isn't constructed for another 30 years, having a map showing where they intend to put it limits the market value of the property in the meantime.
Back in the early '90s ADOT condemned a bunch of properties around the Pima Reservation to make way for the loop 101. They kicked the owners off and decided later that they didn't like that alignment and put those properties on the market and sold them to developers. The former owners sued and won in court. ADOT then decided that they needed that original alignment after all and bought the properties back again.
Mistakes like that make this process worth watching to the end. | | This message was composed entirely of 100% recycled electrons; minimum 35% post-consumer content.

Alert | Chessman- Thank you for all this great information. So much to absorb. Now, I ask one more bit of info from you. The ADOT website maps are sooooo tiny. Do you know of another website with better maps of the proposed routes? Thanks! Granny | | "Your future is a rainbow of beautiful memories when you hold a dream in your heart"

Alert | | Not yet. ADOT and every other group that are making maps will tell you that corridor routs can be a mile or two wide until they determine the exact alignment. Until that year, they put out fairly crude maps. | | This message was composed entirely of 100% recycled electrons; minimum 35% post-consumer content.

in the pdf map file look at the top task bar and you can increase the size of the map by choosing the percentage desired. then just pan the map to locations of your interest. | | Brains, nerve and beauty all in one package! A win win for the Republicans!
