Does anyone give their pets shots themselves? I know that some breeders do this, but I was wondering if anyone else did this on their own. If so, where do you get the vaccines? I was just thinking that it would be less expensive to do it ourselves. <img src='http://www.85239.com/desktopmodules/ntforums/images/emoticons/crazy.gif' height='20' width='20' border='0' title='Crazy' align='absmiddle'>

Chitwood sells vaccines at a great price. The puppy shots are easy, once our dogs turned one their skin was much thicker and not as easy.

I vaccinate my rescue dogs & many of my customers dogs (per their request) w/ the vaccinations @ Chitwoods.

Chitwoods is on JW Pkwy just past Penanscos & Maricopa Animal Hospital on that frontage road.
There is a HUGE white sign in front of their bldg. Go in & tell Debbie (the owner) how old your pooch is & she'll get you the right vaccine. I believe it's the 7 in 1 that they are selling which should be the correct vacc for your pooch. Rabies needs to be given by a licensed vet. The low cost mobile clinic (vacc's only - no surgeries) will be at Stage Stop next Fri. from 10am - 12 noon. Walkins only. 1st come, 1st serve. You can get the rabies there if you need it.

I am having trouble giving my 3 month old mini min pin her shots. She keeps moving around and crying before I even do anything to her. Also, her skin is VERY tough. Any advice on how to give her the shot?

WARNING!
Some breeds of dogs are sensative to the 7 in 1 shots. Particularly the smaller breeds. It's the lepto vaccine that causes problems. How do I know this... remember the toad licking Jack Russell? Last year I gave her the puppy shot at 8pm and by 9pm we were rushing to First Regional for a severe allergic reaction.

If in doubt - get the shot without the lepto. For the most part - that's an east coast disease anyway.
As far as giving the shot - have someone help hold her for you to keep the wiggling to a minimum.

I got the shots done, but on my mini min pin where I gave her the injection there is swelling. Did I do something wrong? Should I be concerned? I know that the site is very tender to the touch.

Sometimes they can swell and get infected take your pet to the vet if you are concerned. Giving [et vaccines yourself can be risky not only may it be given wrong but it could have been stored wrong as well. They are biolgical products that many animals have reactions to. BE CARFULL WITH THEM PLEASE

I know it's little pricier, but Maricopa Animaol Hospital is very good...and friendly too!. They are by the feed store, before you hit Circle K and the train tracks. I have been with them for the last 5 years. I had my female cat fixed there 2 years ago, for $70+. She was in heat at the time. The Vet hospital in the Bashas plaza wanted to charge me $300!!....BASE!.... and more, if the cat was in heat or already pregnant. On top of that, the receptionist at the time seemed to have personal family over, waiting for her to get off work, and they were running rampant over the waiting area. I haven't stepped foot in their since.

I'm not saying that they dont do a good job, since I didn't wait to find out, but at their prices, and having to dodge little kids wreaking havoc, I'm not sorry. I hope thing have changed since then to warrant their inflated prices.

Spoke to a vet about that just yesterday.
She said sometimes there can be a little raised bump for up to 4 weeks & it's usually nothing to worry about. If it doesn't go away or seems to be bothersome to your pooch, bring her in to see the vet. I personally haven't noticed that on the dogs I've vaccinated, but my father said it just happened to his little Chi a few months ago. After a couple of weeks the bump did go away.
