Alert | For the sake of the neighborhood, please leave your coach lights on at night. Since there are no street lamps we need all the light we can get. Leaving them on all night, every night also makes it harder to tell if you are home or not since there won't be a pattern for others (thieves) to recognize.
It would be appreciated. Thanks to those already doing so! | | Janice, not Janet.

Global warming must be a fact! They had a rock concert about it and everything! We must turn off our coach lights to save electricity and Mother Earth!
I'm just kidding. <img src='http://www.85239.com/desktopmodules/ntforums/images/emoticons/smile.gif' height='20' width='20' border='0' title='Smile' align='absmiddle'>

Alert | We've got ours on a timer....sunset to sunrise. We've got the energy efficient bulbs. The cost is nothing compared to the safety and peace of mind. If there is an emergency then emergency personnel will be able to find our house.
Not only that but it helps to lighten up the street. Less of a target for would be thieves.
The timers are under $30 at home depot.....great investment. | | Senior Member Posts: 4625 Joined: Feb 2006

You know, I see this all the time and I'm left to wonder...where did this idea that emergency personnel can't find your house without exterior lights or address painted on curbs come from?
Every piece of fire and police apparatus has either alley lights and spotlights on them. Since the house numbers are located in fairly uniform places on each home within a given development, the emergency responders are able to know where to look, and will be able to light up the appropriate area as they proceed up the street.
My personal experience was that exterior lights would shine at me and in my eyes as I searched for an address at night, which actually made it more difficult to cut through that glare and focus on the address. I know this seems counterintuitive, but try it for yourself sometime and see what you think.

Alert | | Does having your lights on all night attract more bugs? That is the only reason I don't do it. I don't need anymore critters.

Alert | I'd rather be attacked by bugs than a stranger lurking in the darkness.
Is it true that if you switch to energy efficient or halogen bulbs they attract less bugs? I can't remember where I heard that.

Alert | I've noticed no change in bugs when I switched from incandescent bulbs to compact fluorescent energy-saving ones.
Of course, I also don't think leaving lights on is going to stymie a determined criminal. I suppose that makes me a heathen. <img src='http://www.85239.com/desktopmodules/ntforums/images/emoticons/smile.gif' height='20' width='20' border='0' title='Smile' align='absmiddle'>

Alert | Well, it's difficult for any of us to step into the criminal mind...but I am pretty sure the goal of any criminal is to get away with his or her crime. And in order to get away with the crime, he or she would want to do it without being seen.
But unless someone is out staring at the front yard at 3am, who is going to see a crime taking place anyway? Lights on, lights off...it isn't going to matter at that hour unless somebody's actually watching.
After all, vehicles have been stolen in broad daylight, and car vandalism has been reported on streets with streetlights and porch lights glaring. If leaving your lights on makes you feel safer, by all means go for it. But don't get too upset with your neighbor if he or she doesn't agree. : )

Alert | | I just don't like the houses that have 2 100watt bulbs outside, that totally hurt the effects of a darksky community. Get lower wattage, or better yet get lower wattage and motion sensor lights that are lower, and then brighten up with motion.
