We've been in the area about a year, and GERD (gastroesophageal reflux) is rearing its ugly head again-- specifically, extremely painful esophgeal spasms. (The prescribed Xanax does nothing!) Does anybody know of a good treatment for these spasms, and can you recommend a good GE doctor to see?

Thanks!!

i'm no doctor, but why xanax for gerd? prilosec, prevacid, zantac, pepcid, nexium, axid, protonix, aciphex all treat gerd. xanax is a benzodiazepine for anxiety/sleep.

that being said, my regular dr treats my GERD. Once a year i go for my GI scoping at an imaging place and my reg doc takes care of the rest.

If you can't spot the loser, it might be you

I have been dealing with GERD for over 4 years and I am seeing Dr Sarah Umar at the Mayo Clinic, she is the first person who actually listens and understands how painful and debilitating acid reflux and GERD are. You can reach her at 480 301-6990 she is worth the drive and the Mayo Clinic is wonderful. You need Protonix or Aciphex for the GERD not xanax. good luick

GI docs handle more severe cases where there is erosion, precancerous lesions, ans sphincter issues at the entrance to the stomach. Xanax can be prescribed to relieve the tension from the sphincter. It can be a serious thing, it is not just heartburn and should not go untreated. Mark Hoefer is a great GI doc. The number is (480)461-1088 , and is over by Banner Desert Medical Center in Mesa in the Professional buildings there. Hope this helps!

Southeast Valley Gastroenterology (SEVG) in Chandler, next to Chandler Regional Hospital. GREAT docs, I used to work for them & have also been their patient. Dr. Charles Schron started the practice-very thorough doc. Dr. Bracher, very sweet & Dr. Levinthal-awesome doc! I believe they have a new doc there now, but I do not have any first hand knowledge on him. The above three are GREAT doctors, they care about their patients. 480-899-9800... the initial visit is usually with the nurse practitioner, Tina Baker... she knows her stuff! If any procedures need to be scheduled, she will schedule it with one of the docs. If you have any other questions, just pm me-take care & good luck!

GERD is a very painful disease and so many gastro docs just don't understand that. I get the epigastric spasms too and have stomach acid back up into my lungs. I also have Barretts esophagus and I have been told nothing can be done for it and it can lead to cancer. I am in so much pain I can't swallow any food what so ever, Muscle relaxants are very good for the epigastric spasms you are describing and I found xanax to be very helpful. I found you just have to take it at the right time. I take Tums, prilosec, pepcid, zantac, you name it but nothing helps. xanax works by relaxing the diaphram and the esophagus. I have had my esopuagus restsrict to the point I can't even drink water. The best thing I have found is do not eat any food and just keep hydrated as best you can. Ensure, Boost, and all non-dairy products can help you in getting food and pain medicine is also very helpful when the epigastric spasms hits. If you can't swalow, put the medicine under your tongue until it desolves so you get it in your system. There are no good gastroentistinal docs in this area, you would have to go out of state to get help. I have had GERD for 10 years and have not found any docs that understand just how bad it is! one told me to drink a glass of cold water! Don't drink pop, or any kind of fruit juice, find something that doesn't give you heartburn. I have also found that taking 2 prilosec in the morning then taking one an hour before I drink anything of susbastance really helps. Then I load up on tums for the rest of the night. I hope you find help. There arn't even any studies going on to try and cure this disease from hell. It sucks. Good luck to you.

Actually, Dr Hoefer knew exactly how bad it is. A family member has Barret's esophagus and had precancerous areas biopsied, and had the sphincter surgery to help. He seems to be a very caring doc and knows quite a bit! I agree Dr. Shron is good too, although a different family member's last experience with him was not so great. He informed my family member that the precancerous lesions she had at 38 could be cancerous by 48.

Whimever you choose, I wish you the best. Let us know how your doctor experience went!

Dr. Levinthal is great! You will love his accent! His asst. (the one that will schedule your procedure, if you need one) is named Irene-she is very sweet. Please tell them both "LT" sent ya! I used to work the front ofc & schedule patients... I stopped working about a yr ago, when I became pregnant! They are really great docs - I have been around & worked for some other practices that were not so good. These docs care & are highly knowledgable in their field. Good Luck & be sure to arrive early for your appt!

Dear Husband had his appointment with Dr. Levinthal yesterday and liked him quite well. Thanks so much for the recommendation, sterling dreams!

He was started back on Protonix to get things under control again. Dr. said he's free to go on and off as he needs to, which is nice as we don't like to take more medicine than necessary.

Thank you so much, everyone, for your input!!
