Hi! I just found out that my 2 nieces will be moving in with me and both are very far behind. Because of this, I would like to work with them at home but need information about the process.

1. Do you have to register with anyone in order to homeschool?

2. Do you work off a set curriculum...is their one you recommend, or just off the Arizona standards? Do you have to notify anyone of what curriculum you are using, etc?

3. Do homeschooled children need to take AIMS yearly as other kids do, if so, where is this done or where can I find info out?

4. My darlings are 12 and 14, but behind LOTS in some subjects. I would rather homeschool than AZVA because that way we are able to move more than one year at a time if they are able. I would LOVE input from those in the same boat.

Thank so much.

Please feel free to post here or email me at home at nancyj@hughes.net

I'll try to answer what I can...

1. You need to file a form with the county superintendent of schools, just look them up in the phone book and ask them to send you a homeschool packet. A lot of the questions you are asking will be answered in the packet.

2. You choose whatever curriculum you want. You can buy a set of books from one publisher, or you can buy books from a different publisher for each subject. Some people make up unit studies and don't use any text books. You have the flexibility to use what you want to meet the goals you have established.

3. Homeschooled children do not need to take the AIMS test.

4. Don't really have a lot to comment on in this area, other than that enrolling in AZVA is not homeschooling according to the law. They would be considered public school students. I do not know if AZVA allows you to skip ahead, or behind according to your skill level, which is one of the wonderful things about homeschooling.

I hope this helps you out a little. There are a few different support groups here in Maricopa for homeschoolers... Maricopa Homeschool Support, Sight, and possibly another though I don't know the name of it.

Wow, thanks for your help. I didn't know I needed to register with the super so that is the best place to start. I will be testing them this week to find out where their needs are and then I may take you up on text books. I really appreciate your help! Someone posted a curriculum one time ...was it cornerstone, that was a home school curriculum. If you are aware of what thie program is, & if you like it or use it, I would love to hear from you.

That person, you will be hearing from me!

I work for AZVA. Email me at nlarochelle@azva.org and I'll answer any questions you might have about our policy and program.

Here are three comprehensive websites discussing homeschooling and all that it entails in the state of Arizona. There are very simple laws here if you are legally homeschooling. If you participate in AZVA, you are not legally a homeschooler and the laws are different. However, AZVA has a terrific support system in place that can help you through it if that's the route you'd like to take. Connections Academy is another program similar to AZVA.

There are homeschooling groups in Maricopa with many families involved that may fill the need your nieces have to socialize with other children. Please feel free to pm me if you have any questions or if you would like to get involved with either group.

Good luck!

We went with AZVA. I checked out multiple things and this just works for us. The curriculum is a great one. I am impressed that music, art, and physical ed, are part of the daily curriculum. Everything right down to the potting soil for the science projects was delivered the other day for my one niece. We are still waiting for the other's books and half the computer (they are now using mine).

I love the fact the kids still have outings (LOTS OF THEM) clubs, etc. It does take a parent being a very active part of the program to insure success.

My only concern is that on some of the assignments, as soon as you start the assignment online, it is "assuming" that you have done all the book work and gives the student credit for that work. If you don't double check your child's work, against the computer, it would be sort of easy for them to pull a fast one. :o) I'm a teacher though, so not a problem.

Anyway, thanks for the comments before.

Nancy
