Alert | Does anyone know how I could access my router and retrieve the passcode so I could use my other wireless laptop, just so I could use that laptop? It's been a very long time that I had to access my router; therefore, I forgot the WEP passcode.
If I can't access it, then does that mean I have to buy a new router?

Alert | | Press and hold the reset button for 10 seconds on the router. This resets everything to factory defaults.

Alert | Will this reset everything that I had originally changed? You know, the WEP code or anything that I've had to change way back then? I'm afraid that if I do the reset and I get to login into the router network, then it may ask me for other passcodes that I set in the past, which I'm afraid that I've forgotten.
Oh boy, I can't remember if I had to use a CD as part of my installation?
Another thing: Does resetting will caught my wirless receiver to disconnect from the router?
Sorry, too many questions, I'm just very hesitant.

Alert | | It will reset everything. There will be no WEP key required after you do the reset. You can start fresh with the router and the connected computers. Your router will still talk to your cable modem after the reset.

Alert | depends on the router.... If it's a cisco device you can reset it without loosing your settings but they cost about 15 times more than the linksys.... google the model number of your router. there should be an online manual that will instruction on a reset procedure for your device. | | All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing. --Edmund Burke

Alert | Thank you everyone for the inputs. Now, here's another question, I have a laptop that has a wireless card in it, I tried to my router but it won't let me connect. Furthermore, it won't let me enter the passcode to access the router, is there something I'm missing.
Thanks again.
Also, what's the difference between WEP and WPA-PSK security setting on our router?

Alert | | When I set up my router to work with my laptop, I had to remove the password and then let the laptop connect before reapplying the password requirement. Now when I connect, I don't have to enter a password because it recognizes my computer. I can't remember if I had to enter the password the first time or not...

Alert | | As far as WEP and WPA-PSK, you can read about them on wikipedia. I am just beginning to understand the whole wireless thing...

Alert | C&W, I'm not a Guru by any means, but I've had lots of problems with wireless systems over the years that turned out to be caused by firewalls. Have you tried disabling the laptop firewall temporarily, just long enough to try to connect?

WPA-PSK is the successor to WEP. WEP is not very secure, and is fairly easy to crack, given a linux box, wireless card, and maybe 30 minutes of time. Less if youre good at it. WPA-PSK is a bit more secure, tho it really depends on the password you use. Generally, if you use WEP with a good strong password, you'll be fine. If youre that worried about it, make sure you use strong passwords on your computers, and dont share files or folders. Really tho, no wireless protocol is 100% secure.
I tried to my router but it won't let me connect.
can you talk to your router with a wired connection, vs wireless? if you reset it to default, it likely changed a bunch of settings, and you might have to connect to it with a wire first, and reconfigure it...turn wireless back on, set passkeys, etc. | | "Sometimes I think you have to march right in and demand your rights, even if you don't know what your rights are, or who the person is you're talking to. Alert | | Thanks guys, I'm going to follow up. Another note, I'm also wondering if I need to install the software of the router on to the laptop. My desktop that I have wireless on was installed with the router software, I'm wondering if I need to do the same with the laptop. Unfortunately, I can't find the router software that I had originally have. I'll also go check the manufacturer's website for possibly software.

They've got it down to 1 minute or less now. I wouldn't connect to any hotspot or public access point without a VPN. | | Joined: Jul 2005

shouldnt need that software at all. might not even need it on the desktop, depending on the router...
