<img src='http://www.85239.com/desktopmodules/ntforums/images/emoticons/smile.gif' height='20' width='20' border='0' title='Smile' align='absmiddle'>Hi all,
I am a single father that just moved into Homestead. I have joint custody of my 2-1/2 year old son. Although I don't have have him anywhere near enough (the usual Wed's and every other weekend), I am concerned about when I do have him, what I should do or where I would go in case a real emergency happens. He is my only child, and I don't have a lot of experience with emergency procedures, and only 2-1/2 years of experience being a PT father.
From what I have gathered, there isn't an emergency room or place to bring him if something happens after hours, here in town. I was wondering if there is someone (with emergency medical experience)that I could call that would be willing to come to assist if need be??
Or is there a service or number that I should be calling that will provide this?
I called 911 once when I lived in Gilbert, and the line was busy. So I am assuming that doing that way out here would yield about the same results. I could drive him to Banner pretty fast if I had to...
I did look through some of the prior posts but didn't find an answer I was looking for, so I apologize if I am re-asking old questions.
I am just wondering what all of the parents here are relying on in case an emergency arises.
Thank you for your thoughts.

Well we do have the fire station on Porter and I believe they have the helicopter... but I have Sun Valley Pediatric Urgent Care (SW corner of W Chandler Blvd and McClintock) They are open 7 days a week 10 am-Midnight (480)355-5437 (kids)

I hope this helps.

If you have a real emergency - call 911. The paramedics and EMTs are only a few minutes away and are much better equipped to handle an emergency than you would be trying to drive 20 minutes to a hospital. Let them make the decision if he needs to be transported by them or you to further medical care. Plus - I've never had 911 been busy when I've called. Think of it this way - which would you rather be - embarrassed you called them or sorry you didn't call them?

For the simple and/or stupid questions - contact your health insurance provider and see if they have a helpline. Many companies have a 24 hour helpline where (usually) an RN answers your questions like "What's the best thing to use for poison ivy?" - that type of thing.

Keep Poison Control's phone number on your fridge or someplace very handy. Children that age tend to eat things they shouldn't.

Is there a family member you can call 24/7 (mother, sister, aunt etc) that you can call with questions? Only reason I used female relatives is women are the traditional child caregivers and would most likely know the answers.

Set some ground rules:

No eating Comet cleanser before dinner
No playing with knives w/o asking Dad's permission
No eating scorpions or snakes

I think you can borrow a book at the library.
Look for " Emergency Help for Toddlers, For Idiots!"

I've had to run my 4 year old to urgent care because she fell backwards and had a large lump on the back of her head. They were fine for me. I've also had to call 911 for my 20mo old. They were very caring and responsive. You could tell that they had kids themselves. If you child is sick - don't wait until the last minute to get help! Also, get the number for your son's pediatrician. They should have an after hours nurse that can answer any questions and advise you what to do.

thanks to all that replied, with the exception of the drummer. either this person has no children, or is just thoughtless. either way, that response was uncalled for.

I have a child and another on the way.
I'm very thoughtful, but you just made yourself sound so lost. You have no sense of humor. It's free to get one you know.

sorry, i do have a sense of humor. i just react strongly to the word 'idiot', especially when directed at me.
if you knew me, you would understand.

Sorry.
My wife and mother call me idiot all the time. I kind of like it.

no worries, i'm over it. you were referring to those 'for idiots' books that are out for everything. i didnt catch that until after i posted a response. i never read those books.
i'm always being told to lighten up. i tend to take everything seriously.
but i do have a sense of humor; when there is time for humor.
its all good.
