Ok so I'm from California and have been programed to recycle. I have seen so many recyclables in the garbage. We used to go to RAM and drop off our recycling but now we have a bin from Maricopa Disposal. I plan to switch to Waste Management because the accept more recyclables, I have read in our newsletter they will start recycling. So am I the only recycler in RED?<img src='http://www.85239.com/desktopmodules/ntforums/images/emoticons/shocked.gif' height='20' width='20' border='0' title='Shocked' align='absmiddle'>

I'm from Phoenix and Tempe and recycling is programmed in me as well.

I was glad to hear that for a nominal fee I would be able to recycle in Maricopa, then I was told Glennwilde was not a pick up area. I have to verify this info myself I guess but I am dissapointed. I'll have to figure out where the drop off facility is and do it myself, which uses gas and dirties the air quality! DARN IT!

Not until they give us recyling bins.. I woul dbe glad to donate it to the City.. they just have to come and get it. We use to in San diego.

Just doing it one day at a time. Change is good and it should be looked upon as an improvment! not a problem.

We recycle too. It's a small fee and they do come get it. The only thing that sucks is that they won't pick up glass.

Call Maricopa Disposal - 520-568-4020
It's $5/month and billed quarterly.
We've been the only person on our street recycling for the last 2 years.
I wish they'd p/u glass too, but at least they added plastic (#1 & #2) awhile back. I still
drop off our glass at the recycle center 1x/month.

I started a thread called RECYCLE RECYCLE RECYCLE on the "old" forum about 6 months ago & was suprised at the lack of response/posts to it.

The Recycling Association of Maricopa's "drop-off" facility (RAM)-- 46250 W. McDavid Rd. -- accepts all paper (newspaper, office paper, junk mail, magazines, phone books), cardboard, chipboard (e.g. cereal boxes), #1 & #2 plastic bottles, aluminum cans, steel cans, glass bottles, electronics, appliances, scrap metal, tires, car/truck batteries, and usable furniture.

If you contract for a residential curbside recycling service, both Maricopa Disposal Services and Waste Management accept the same items in the bin, which is: all paper products (see list above), cardboard, chipboard, #1 & #2 plastic bottles, aluminum cans and steel cans. If you contract with Maricopa Disposal Services, all of the recyclables collected comes to RAM. RAM does not accept glass bottles in the curbside recycling program, because they are a non-profit corporation with limited equipment. When loads are delivered, they are dumped onto a concrete slab shattering the glass into bits. Their workers sort everthing by hand and get cut. You can bring all of your glass to RAM directly on Saturdays.

RAM is open to the public on Saturdays. Their summer hours are 8:00 til noon.

If you have any recycling questions, call RAM at 520-568-9428.

To get to the recycle center, you'd turn on Edwards (either just south or just north of the tracks depending on which way you're coming from) Edwards turns into McDavid. The recycle center is on the right about 3/4 mile down. Can't miss is.

According to the most recent newspaper article, they've been having to turn people away on Saturday because they're getting overwhelmed. (All volunteers) Go early if you can. I haven't had a problem if I'm there first thing in the AM to drop off our glass.

This is what I don't get... Why pay them to recycle?? They are going to fill a hudge truck with it and then get $$$ for it anyway?

Most people do not realize, but the Recycling Associaiton of Maricopa (RAM) is a d.b.a. of ECO, Inc. a non-profit corporation with very limited resources. They opened 10 years ago, because there was no trash service or landfill in Maricopa. Illegal burning and dumping was how refuse was managed. ECO, Inc. started RAM as an alternative to illegally dumping and burning. At RAM, they accept more recycled commodities than any other recycling center in Arizona -- at their expense. Their operating costs are three times that of their revenues.

After opening RAM, ECO created another d.b.a. ECO Restoration Society (ERS). ERS volunteers spent years clearing hundreds of thousands of pounds of illegally dumped trash from our deserts.

The Recycling Association of Maricopa receives no funding from the City of Maricopa to be open to the public for recycling and trash disposal. Pinal County pays for them to be open one day per week (Pinal County owns their site, RAM leases it for $1 per year). They would like to be open daily to the public to accommodate the growing Maricopa community, but currently do not have the funding. They are at the facility during the week processing Maricopa Disposal's curbside recycling, but do not make any money from Maricopa Disposal or the recycling that is brought to them, because the cost to process out the trash from the loads (which is greater than 50%) is three times that of the revenues received from the recycled commodities.

The recent article in the paper claiming that they turn people away was misleading. They do turn people away during the week, when they are "closed" to the public. But, they NEVER turn anyone away during their "open" business hours on Saturdays.

I don't have a problem with paying their fee. I would gladly pay a bit more if they would take the glass too. That is the only problem I have. They use to pick it up but then changed their policies.

I don't understand something. We had Waster Management as our disposal company back East and they provided recycling bins and the cost was included in our bill. Why can't they do that here?

We save our cans and take them to cash for cans in Mesa when we head for the valley. With the cost of gas these days, it pays for our gas for our trip! We have WM in RED and were told no Maricopa Disposal.

When RED was developed, they contracted with Waste Management for trash only. There was a lot of residents that wanted recycling, but the contract with Waste Management was through 2007 for trash only. Waste Management did not want to add recycling, because they could not increase their rates until 2007 and it would cost them -- at their expense -- because they would have had to provide a third pick-up day for recycling. The State Administrative code requires that all waste haulers pick-up refuse twice per week, unless the City has a recycling variance approved from the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality allowing for one day trash and one day recycling.

In 2004, Maricopa Disposal Services convinced the HOA to allow them to come in and contract with RED customers through a subscription service for curbside recycling. Maricopa Disposal Services made an arrangement to take the recycling to the Recycling Association of Maricopa for processing. Then, the newer developments started contracting with Maricopa Disposal to include both Trash and Recycling. For example, Maricopa Meadows and Tortosa have both services in their contract.

In February of this year, the City of Maricopa passed a resolution allowing for the Recycling Variance -- allowing waste haulers to offer one day trash pick-up and one day recycling pick-up. The process requires that the Pinal County Public Health Director receives from the City a Vector Control Plan showing that by reducing trash pick-up to one day per week, the City ensures "the protection of public health by preventing or controlling the breeding of flies and other vectors in solid waste containers". The Vector Control Plan requires that 25% of all residential recycling containers are inspected annually.

Upon approval by the Pinal County Public Health Director of the Vector Control Plan, then the Recycling Variance is sent to the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality for final approval.
