Just wondering, we are planning on maybe going on a road trip next spring and because of the mileage, we're considering renting a car. Didn't think it would be an issue, but then saw that Enterprise limits the amount of miles per day when driving out of state.

Does anyone know of any car rental companies that allow you to drive out of state with unlimited mileage?

Enterprise limits to 150 miles per day out of state. We're planning to go about 3500 miles roundtrip in a matter of 16 days.

If we have to, we'll just use one of our cars, but thought we would considering renting first.

Every company that I know does not have out of state unlimited free miles. 150 miles is about standard.

Some companies will also only allow you to go to a bordering state with their vehicle. So, if you rent a car in AZ you would only be allowed to go to CA, NM, CO, or UT. If you go to a state other than those and something happens you can be in big trouble.

Someday the moutain might get 'em, but the law never will.

Makin' their way,
The only way they know how,
That's just a little bit more than the law will allow.

I only rented a car once and that was to vegas and i remember Enterprise didn't have a limit at the time, so when we started looking at rentals this weekend and saw the limit, it surprised me.

I guess one option, if this is the vacation we choose, is to rent a car in each state we go to...oh, that would be fun i'm sure....just don't want to add miles to either of our cars at this point.

The other options for vacations would be LA and San Diego, never been to either place or a cruise for 7 nights to Mexico. Just thought a road trip would be fun. I guess we'll see!

If you choose to rent a car in each state remember to ask about drop fees. A lot of companies will charge you a fee if you drop the car off somewhere other than where you rented it. Sometimes this can be several hundred dollars.

If they need that particular car where you are going you should be fine, but most of the common cars they have plenty of at each location...

Do they ask if you're going out of state when you rent? If not just don't tell them. Falls under the "don't ask, don't tell" policy.

I rented through Alamo with the Costco discount.

No matter who you go through... Be sure to pick-up and return at an airport. You'll save a ton.

Depending on where you are going.. It may be cheaper/better to rent a one-way to/from there and rent another while "in-town"

We always used Avis when driving to northern CA. They had unlimited mileage at the time.

If you have unlimited mileage, you can travel all across the country. They're worried about if you take the car into Mexico or Canada. Alamo is a proponent of this.

doesn't it cost more at an Airport?
When I was looking for a car, I looked away from the airport that way you don't get the Airport TAX cost for visitors.

Just doing it one day at a time. Change is good and it should be looked upon as an improvment! not a problem.

Yes, there's a airport tax... but that doesn't matter, it's pretty minimal.. the rental companies make their money at the airport and would rather have them there.

I was looking at a rental recently. If I picked up and returned the car up at the airport, it was ~$45.. The same rental from the 5 closest places outside the airport was ~$180..

Thank you all so much for the info.

I know Enterprise's website says 150 miles per day out of state, unlimited instate miles. But I did check with Avis and Hertz and neither website says anything and I couldn't think of any other company to look into.

I never even thought of the airport. I tried to avoid the airport due to traffic getting there, but if it saves money, the traffic could be worth it. I'll have to check into those.
