If you're looking for maximum cost savings, Vizio is the cheapest. But Sony and Samsung definitely have better picture quality.

That's just not true. Look at any of the review websites and the Vizio is just as good as Samsung or Sony.

It is also an AMERICAN company.

I have a 50" samsung plasma that is awesome. Samsun like sony is a little pricey but my son is a manager at best buy and we got it for 1/2 price on a promotion they had for employees. sweet deal

Sony: boo!
I'm sure their TVs are fine, but I'm just not a big fan of the company.

Samsung: yay!
I've heard very good things about the TVs. Every one that I've seen looks great

Vizio: hit or miss
I understand that the quality control on these just isn't that great. You may get a very good TV, or one that ends up having problems.

Personally, I have a Phillips Ambilight Plasma. I think they make Ambilight LCDs now, and the cost isn't that much of a premium over non-Ambi's. The backlight does actually make a huge difference in reducing eye strain when the room is dark (great for movie watching).

Sorry, I have and they just don't reflect that. Especially after calibration, the Vizio sets just don't measure up. One area that they fall seriously short in are the upscalers, they really scrimp on those. I mean, I can stand in Costco looking at a 60" Sony LCD right near a 42" Vizio and the Sony is better as far as gradients, pixelation, flesh tone and blacks go. It's not subtle either. If Vizio were just as good, gradients and pixelation should actually be better on a smaller screen.

In fact, here's a review:

CNET editors' review

Good
6.6
out of 10

The good: Inexpensive for a 1080p LCD; accurate primary colors; includes user-menu grayscale adjustments; slick styling with touch-sensitive buttons; ample connectivity.

The bad: Produces relatively light color of black; grayscale somewhat blue even after adjustment; no dot-by-dot aspect-ratio mode with 1080i sources.

The bottom line: Although its image quality still can't compete with the plasma competition, the 1080p Vizio GV47

Versus a Sony:

CNET editors' review

Very good
7.0
out of 10

The good: Produces relatively deep shade of black; very good standard-definition video processing; accurate Cinema preset; numerous picture controls.

The bad: Lacks user-menu fine color-temperature controls; somewhat uneven backlight uniformity; slightly cumbersome menu design.

The bottom line: Sony's entry-level LCD, the KDL-46S3000 offers fine picture quality for most viewers, but bargain shoppers and home theater sticklers alike may want something different.

I highlighted the important aspects of why the Vizio doesn't measure up.

It is just as American as Sony. Did you realize that the Taiwanese company Amtran is the majority owner of Vizio? It's not like the sets are being manufactured here anyway. Sony also does have an American division, so your money does stay here: Sony Corporation of America. I also had the very unfortunate experience of dealing with Vizio support once. Two hours on hold.

I'm not saying don't buy Vizio, but there is definite picture quality difference.

I know nothing about Vizio.

I think most will agree that Samsung is the best DLP.

Sony is a great LCD.

IMO Sammy DLP is better than Sony LCD.

Take it for what its worth. Go here. Good info. http://www.highdefforum.com/

Sony: Have a SXRD 60 inch. LOVE it. the clarity on the HD channels is much better than the standard DLP and Plasma, only LCD is close. I have to say I wasnt a big fan of their company for a good period of time. Their stereo recievers went to crap as did their other components. As of late, with the insurgence of the SXRD technology and the Bluray stuff thay have been on a major upswing. (this from the guy with a Phillips TV? LOL, love you B)

Samsung: I can't say anything bad about Samsung. They are hte only DLP which has 1080p capable Component inputs right now. SO if you choose a DLP for your 360 this is probably the way to g0. Samsung in reality made the first DLP tv and has had the most time to develop the tech so a good choice here.

Vizio: The walmart TV of HD tv's. You get what you pay for. You remember when Sams and Wally world were selling those super cheap DVD players for like 20 bucks back before EVEREYONE dropped their prices? Well they had the top rated lasers in them BUT CRAP for hardware. Thats about the same for the Vizio. If you are on an EXTREME budget, you probably shouldnt be buying a TV but if you do <img src='http://www.85239.com/desktopmodules/ntforums/images/emoticons/smile.gif' height='20' width='20' border='0' title='Smile' align='absmiddle'> Get the Vizio.

If you ARENT on an extreme budget, Go with the SOny SXRD, or the Samsung DLP. I would stay away from the LCD or PLasma lines. But if you must go ultra flat, go with LCD.

BE SURE TO BUY THE EXTEMDED WARRANTY> Most of them cover the bulb replacements.

Sam's Club has a 55" SXRD for $1700. I don't think there is a rear-projection out there that beats it.

And what's wrong with Phillips? It looked better than any of the LCDs or DLPs that were out at the time. There was no discernible difference in picture quality between it and the other plasmas, and for the same price as a Samsung, I got the Ambilight feature.

I still don't think 1080p is that much of an issue. Unless you have just the right mix of viewing distance and screen size, you're not going to be able to notice anything. Sure, you may try to convince yourself that you see a difference, but I highly doubt it.
