Alert | Go west on US-84 towards Gila Bend (it will turn into I-8). Exit at Vekol Road and turn left (south). The trail head to hike up Table Top Mountain begins about 13 miles south of the exit. Be forewarned: there is no cell phone reception at all, and the roads are very bad. There are large signs warning that this remote area is a high smuggling coridor, and there have been some murders there.
I wanted to hike Table Top with my family last May. We drove our Dodge Caravan until I was afraid we would get stuck (thick talcum powder-like dust, like two feet and getting thicker). I realized that I hadn't told anyone where I was going, had no cell phone coverage, and had my wife and four children with me. I didn't want to get stuck/stranded, so we parked and walked around in the desert and collected rocks. The kids had a blast! The very next day, the newspaper reported that a burned car had been found very near where we were at the day we had been there. The driver, burned with the car, had been shot in the head. The speculation was that it was a coyote killing.
I still want to go there; the view is supposed to be magnificent. About four years ago, there was a big Boy Scout project using Table Top, South Mountain, the Estrella mountains (near Mobile) using signal mirrors to flash parties atop the mountains. I'll make sure when I go to let people know where we're at, have a high-clearance vehicle with 4WD, have guns & ammo, and arrange for someone to stay with the parked vehicle. | | | |

Alert | | I've been there. I took a fast lifted 4wd, lots of desert knowledge, my redneck brother and a complete arsenal of large caliber guns. I can assure you that almost all are needed, minus the redneck brother but Im sure he can be hired out for the right amount of Pabst blue ribbon or Natural Ice. We saw all sorts of interesting things out there, not somewhere that I would take a family or my girlfriend. There is definitely something going on out there, I kinda want to go play with Lamplight out there sometime. | |

Alert | | BP knows about the area very well. There are solar powered sensors out there near watering holes. Also under most of the trees around these watering holes. back packs, garbage, empty water jugs... BP knows whats up and I think they are monitoring it. | |

Shot a drug smuggler (500 lbs of pot?) in the butt, when he ran from them. He got amnesty for testifying against them, they got 10+ years. Just this week the dealer was arrested again for another big load of pot he was bringing over the border. | | | |

Alert | | People areas like this arent just in our backyard, back in the day we found numerous areas in the Maricopa mountains that were Drug drops, large caverns dug into the desert floor covered up with plywood and a layer of dirt to conceal. There is drops and illegal immigrant activity through out AZ, I have pictures when I have time I will post, of area just outside of Peoria by Lake Pleasant where illegals move through weekly if not nightly, it honestly looks like a goodwill bus crashed out there backpacks, bottles, clothes. Not just in piles strewn in a area covering a few miles. Buddies down south (hunting) has some good stories to tell as well as being ripped off when away from camp tracked the illegals down which then turned into a running gun fight until they got back to the border and for them safty. good story I will have to tell you all sometime. | | | |
