Alert | We packed up the coolers, chairs, and family to enjoy what was anticipated to be a good fireworks show (expected to be better than last year's). We spent an hour or two mingling in the crowd of fellow Maricopa residents before heading back to our seats for the 9:30pm display. Our family grew anxious as 9:35pm went by, then 9:40, and well you get the point. After a 20+ minute delay the "show" began. I HAVE NEVER BEEN SO DISAPPOINTED IN A FIREWORKS SHOW as I was last night. Honestly I could've given the town a better display myself. I was able to hold small conversations between fireworks and WHERE WAS THE GRAND FINALE??? It was absolutely ridiculous, an utter embarassment and I hold the city of Maricopa responsible. Who did we hire for this and how much did it cost us tax-payers to fund that sub-par performance?? I think we deserve answers. Is there anyone else out there as frustrated, disappointed, and upset as me and my family?

Alert | we were disappointed as well. the advertised start time of 9:30pm was pushing the envelope on being too late for our kids to enjoy as it is, but when it was nearly 30 minutes later than that...... we were also disappointed with the quality of the show.

Alert | Griswold, I wasn't there; gosh, I'm not even in Maricopa yet, but your post was so descriptive I felt like I was, and I'm feeling a little disappointed too. Had it been a wonderful display I can only imagine how your post would've delighted me with an explosive grand finale. Just thought I would let you know that even though the subject matter was sore (rightly so) I enjoyed your writing. Serp.

Alert | Allright. I liked the fireworks. Was it the best display ever? No. Did I enjoy it? Yes. I also liked hanging out with neighbors.
One thing I really need to point out on your post, though, is the start time. I also feel it was late HOWEVER, I don't think it physically could have started earlier. The wind was blowing pretty good before the start of the show. For a while, those fireworks would have shot sideways into homes and brush.

Alert | WHOA.......I don't know where the "Griswolds" were last night, but you could never telll that they were at the same event that we attended. In our group, we all thought that it was an outstanding fireworks event, plus you can never "bitch" about a "free lunch". The quality of the displays were great, and different. Griswold, you may have spent too much time in the beer garden, and your vision was a little bleary.
The movie had a couple of glitches at first, and the weather was not totally cooperating, with the threat of some far off lightening, so that makes the few minutes delay in getting started a "moot point". The fireworks display was longer than normal and we all felt we really got our "money's worth". If that is what some people want to bitch about, they should not have come out in the first place, knowing the time schedule. Being 10 minutes late in starting is nothing, and sdome people will bitch about anything.
Remember, you didn't have to spend much on gas, you got a good movie, and some excellent fireworks........and it was FREE....did you want "cheese with your whine"?

Alert | Ah , but did you have to use gas money , NO. Was the entire event FREE to you,YES . Sheesh ,A little gratitude for those who worked really hard to make it all come together.
I think the city , (Marty, David etc...) did a fantastic job . Did you see how many people were there? It was PACKED ! 3-4 times the people as last yr.
Ya, i agree that the fireworks were less than "exciting" but they were a learning experience. Less (time)is More.
I think 20 minutes of fast paced would of been better, and a better sound system would of been appreciated. (and a longer cd, add some classical music. Watch the Boston Pops and use some of that music.) More shuttles running , OR, Kick up the city's insurance, and use school buses. Maybe the city can change it up a little. Have a Small county fair, Run some rides. Get the local High School band to play the music. Have a local singing contest to sing the National Anthem.
EMT's were staffed , Police presence was visible everywhere. I applaud those who worked and were sweating their butts off so we could have a safe and cheap holiday !!! THANK YOU !!!

Alert | | I was down in marana on the 4th (somehow I think that would have been even more disappointing to everyone here) but I did see last years here... and I must say I was rather impressed then. Unless it changed dramatically, it was at least as good as tempe's showing...

Alert | | I wouldnt expect the show to look like Tempe or Glendale, I think it was pretty cool for a town of this size. I was only about 250 feet from where they were lighting them, and I could see them having a hard time with how windy it was so maybe thats why it took a little longer. Great job by the city and a great turnout.

Alert | | i watched the show from my front yard in tortosa and thought the show was pretty good for our town. The fact that we got any fireworks at all was great. I say good job city of maricopa. Nothing is ever perfect.

Alert | Griswold,
You are a spoiled brat. It was free. You were with family and friends. People put what they had into this show. You owe an apology to those who worked hard for us last night.

THANK YOU !!! NickEl19655, and STUDGLOVE, and the others who said positive things....Good for you. At least you made me feel better about our community. If only the nay sayers would look on the bright side instead of bashing the efforts of the folks who try to do something to make our town have some pride in Maricopa!!!! Luceee
I find that there are too many people on this forum that do nothing but complain about EVERYTHING. It sucks to be them.

Alert | I watched the fireworks from my back yard and thought they were great! I didn't feel there was any longer of a delay between the fireworks than anywhere else I've ever been. They had nice color and a damn long display!
I don't think i have ever been to a display that started on time, and if the delay was indeed due to the wind NO ONE should be complaining. If the wind carried one of those mortars into the crowd it could have been you in excruciating pain, dismembered or dead. It was very windy in my backyard during the display.
I read an article a few years ago that described how our fast paced society would be growing tired of our old traditions and become less impressed with displays such as fireworks, concerts and so on. The article went on to mention that organizers will have to work harder to capture the attention of a society growing less imaginative by the day. Perhaps for Griswold this is the case....
I think our city did a terrific job! thanks to those that worked so hard to pull this off. | | Follow your bliss. Happiness is a conscious decision

Alert | mallard..........THANKS so much for your pics!!! They will just help the memory from last nights display last a little longer. Our family enjoyed reliving the show also.
Was there anyone else that shot some pics to share with us???
I also heard that because of electrical storms surrounding the area, that they had to set off each display by hand lighting the fireworks.WOW!!!
KUDO's to the entire staff for this years event.
I guess in every bushell, you will find "one bad apple"
THANKS AGAIN MARICOPA!!!!!! BE PROUD!!!!!

Alert | It's truly entertaining that some people repeatedly point out that it was a "FREE" event so people should show some appreciation, or should not complain about being disappointed. Let me remind all of you....THIS EVENT WAS PAID FOR BY THE TAX-PAYERS!!!! Corman, I did not receive a "free lunch" nor did I ask for one. It speaks volumes about a person's character and lack of education when the first thing you want to do is generalize someone by saying they spent too much time in the beer garden. So because I did not care for the fireworks display I must have been intoxicated. Reality is this: The fireworks were a little more than what I use to set off as a kid growing up. I've seen better fireworks shows after a homerun at baseball games. I did not complain about anything other than the fireworks.
And for those meteorologists out there, the wind and "far off lightning" continued throughout the entire event. Lets remember fireworks displays are meant for our children so we should consider moving start times up to 8:30 or 8:45.
Oh, and to Marni....you should be ashamed for being a Democrat!

You are a spolied brat plain and simple. You have kids I take it by your post. Sadly that you are most likely teaching them to look a gift horse in the mouth as well.
Really you should be appreciative of what you have.
