Ok, I was traveling last week and I had a craving for watermelon.  Went to the store, bought one, brought it back to my kitchenette and when I cut it open it was not as I was hoping it would be.  It was not juicy, it was kind of grainy and airy.  Where the little white seeds used to be, there were empty holes.

Does anyone know is there a way you can tell if a watermelon has passed its prime?

I guess it's a learned trait, but I thump the melons with my middle finger  until I find one that sounds just right!!       I can't describe it because I think it's more psychological than anything, which is what most of you were expecting a psycho like me to say!

I was discussing this with my mom and my sister-in-law just yesterday, apparently you can ask to have a melon cut open at the store and then decide if it is worth purchasing. . . according to my mom (who has done this) they are usually more than willing. Just take it up to the guy stocking the fruit and veggies and ask!

I have also heard to look for the sun spots - that means it wasn't picked too early, and to look for bee stings because that means they are ripe as well. I think the only way to tell if it is past it's prime is to cut it open though. . .

This year, I've had really good luck - yay for me!

I spoke to a watermelon buyer (wholesale) recently, he said there isn't a good way to judge them by looking, but he told me if I got a bad one I should return it.  He said the grocers will always be glad to replace them.

I haven't had to check out his advice yet this year, but I love watermelon and I really can't stand grainy, over-ripe ones so it's just a matter of time.

One of the produce clerks in the store with the red 'B' is always very helpful with finding the best produce. If it isnt up front he gladly goes to the back to bring it up, with a smile!

Watermelons should feel heavy and sound hollow when thumped.

For other types of melons use your nose. Look for strong fragrance and sweetness.

The one I picked was very heavy, although I didn't thump it. Great idea to have them cut it at the store!
