Think I might have a child with the ODD condition, looking for support with anyone who thinks or knows that child has been diagnosed and has these tendencies.

My son was diagnosed with ADD and ODD with possible CD tendencies. It takes a thorough psychiatric evaluation done while inpatient to make the correct diagnosis. Even then - other factors may be part of the equation. In my son's case, allergies played a big part of the triggers.

Why do you think your son has ODD? PM me if you don't want to publish on here.

after reviewing the web-sites she exhibites many of the condition/markers. Its mades worse by her having 2 household and a noncommunicative/combative mother.

sadly you can not place a child in consuling without consent by both parents and since we don't work together in-the-best-interest-of-the-child believe that my next best step is to attempt to improve my parenting skills to better assit OUR daugther at least at one home. Therfore, having a parent that is working with an ODD condition could be especially benefical in helping to determine:

1. if she might have ODD

2. provide input learned through experience with ODD

Dave these two sites have good information.

http://addadhdadvances.com/ODD.html

My guess never having met you or your daughter and not being a psychiatric professional - your daughter has several issues taking place. She is bouncing between two households with different rules and the two people she looks to for guidance and development are not in sync regarding her best needs. How old is she? I'm betting pre-teen to early teen - 10 to 14???

She may have ODD or she may be acting out based on her life situation. They would look similar. Does she exhibit symptoms only at home or at school and other social situations? If she is well behaved at school but hell to be around at home - I'd say situational not ODD. It isn't something that can be turned on and off.

It seems contradictory but kids with ODD respond to set rules and guidelines. BUT let them help establish those rules and guidelines. Bedtime? She wants midnight on a school night and you want 9am. LET it be midnight but you have to get up at 6am for school no matter what. After staying up for a week with the new found freedom, she will go to bed early because she is TIRED!

And as the one article says - pick your battles. If she wants her bedroom to be casual messy - is it worth an argument? OK - your room can be a bit messy (but no food or molding things) but you can't leave your stuff out in the other parts of the house. This is a good compromise. Kids won't die because their clothes are on the floor. But part of that compromise - dirty clothes must go in the hamper or I don't wash it. If she runs out of clean clothes - she'll voluntarily start putting her clothes in the hamper! (Or have her do her own laundry)

If you believe ODD and have the insurance available - take her to an allergist. Many kids diagnosed with ADD/ADHD and ODD actually have severe allergies. And because of the histamine response, it mimics various disorders. Remove the allergen or treat exposure and you remove the cause of most of the problems.

Have you checked into a family counselor for you and your daughter together to deal with the divorce issues? That may be a way around consent. It isn't in-patient but it is something. If your ex pushed the issue with the court - what judge would say you are being a bad parent to seek help for your child?
