My wife and I are considering opening a used music store in Maricopa. We have plans on carrying used CD's, cassettes, LP's (both 45 and 33 RPM) and yes, even 8 tracks. LOL. We plan on taking trades for cash or store credit and we would like to also sell used MP3 players, etc.

What we want to know is if this would be something the residents would be interested in.

This is my only profile not banned....LOL!

In the age of sharing music over the internet, why would anyone frequent a used music store? I remember going to Zia when I was a kid, but that was a LONG time ago.

Because some people actually want to own a copy of the album, the song, whatever it might be.

If you download a song, you have to abide by whatever Digital Rights Management nonsense the provider sets up. Half the time, you pay for a song, and you maybe able to put it on one ipod...but what if you have two of em?

Meanwhile, you buy the CD, you get to transfer it onto a tape or ipod or other musical device ad nauseum, with no restriction. Which, frankly, is the way it should be.

To answer the initial post, I must throw my hat in the "highly interested" category.

Fab Idea!!! In CA where I am from there is such a place and its booming...there are avid music collectors of all kinds out there. They took trades as well and I sold tons of stuff to them, they did a card for frequent buyer card too, you may want to consider that. It is a very happening place and I think you have a great business to go start! Good Luck.

No store is going to buy a copied cd.

If it is not the original cd in the original case why would anyone want to buy that?

I would be interested and would definetly check it out. I would love to pick up some old albums. By chance do you have and record players to sell too?

I would make a large exchange with you since I recently put my entire music collection onto my computer and Ipod. How much store credit for 400 or so cd's??

Sorry- my bad. Read download and figured buying on line.

I am in the same boat and it should be legal since you are not selling a made cd just trading or selling the original item you bought.

Precisely. When you purchase the CD, you are able to do what you want with it. You can transfer it to your computer, portable music player device thingamabob, etc. If you then decide to sell the CD to another party, that's your choice too.

Now, if you were to try and return the thing for the full price you paid, that'd be wrong. Bad idea there.

Cause, there's nothing like sliding a piece of vinyl out of it's cover and placing it on your turntable...

Recycled Sounds...great idea ..great name..go for it..there are a lot of "old hippies" out here..in fact we just met someone who moved to Maricopa that's on the cover of the original "Woodstock Album"...we moved over 400 plus albums cross country with us..didn't even entertain the thought of leaving them behind...nothing like that snap..crackle..pop!!!! GOOD LUCK!

The RIAA doesn't want you to transfer music to multiple devices. Currently, if you own a CD you can transfer those songs on to as many devices (computers, copied CDs, mp3 players) as you like just so long as you maintain ownership of the cd. As soon as you no longer own that CD, the music that you have is illegal. For downloaded music (from iTunes, etc) you just have to abide by the rules set forth by the online store. iTunes recently allowed some tracks to be purchased DRM free. These tracks cost a bit more, but you can put them on as many devices as you want.

As for the used music store... I don't really purchase CDs anymore. By no means am I a music aficionado, so I'm probably not the target market anyway. It may also be a good idea to provide a digital music managing service. Show people how to use those new iPods, rip CDs, backup CDs, transfer records/tapes/8tracks to digital. Just some thoughts.

I'd probably run in there...

I like to buy CD's every now and then.. I'll usually DL a few songs to check the album out and if I like most of the songs, I'll buy the CD.. I pretty much refuse to buy new CD's anyway... CD's are what.. $20 a pop?? They were that much 15 years ago.. you mean to tell me the cost of making/distributing CD's has gone UP?? The music industry has only itself to blame for the popularity of illegal file sharing...

I wish I could get the woman to get rid of her collection..lol..

Thanks for the input. I am currently looking into the hardware to transfer all formats to digital, thanks Trogdor! Great idea!

Anewman, I PM'd you about your collection.

Anyone else who has CD's, cassettes, LP's, etc they no longer want please message me and let me know. We are in the process of buying our inventory. My goal is to have a mix of about 8-10 thousand between the different formats, probably about 5-6 thousand CD's and then a smaller mix of LP's, cassettes and 8 tracks.

We also want to eventually stock used music equipment like the actual players, but right now we're not sure when that will be.

just a thought...

a friend of mine used to sell used CD's in college.. not really a "business", just for beer money mostly... He got most of his CD's at garage sales and "lot" sales on eBay.. He'd get them for pennies (less than penny sometimes..lol..)..
