07/15/2008 10:52 PM Alert

I just purchased two 4' Mex Fan Palms and dug them up kept roots intact.  They went into shock and most of the outer fans turned brown and the straight sprigs in the center are still real green.  After all efforts to keep them watered the rains hit thank Goodness.  Anyway......is there hope? Are these hardy plants?  Can I do anything else for them to help them survive?

Thanks in advance

Can you post a pic?

They are hardy and quick to fill out..did you plant them yet?

You can cut off the browned fronds..use a sharp tree pruning saw or a large lopper.

keep watering; we moved into a house 4 years ago where the palms were scruffy due to neglect.  they are just now coming into normal with lots of water and palm fertilizer.  one, I thought would never make it but persistence and water pay off.

dig a large saucer around the base to hold water.

What me worry?

mexican fan palms are some of the hardiest and easiest to grow and transplant. I have one in my yard that I got from Lowes, it was half dead and reduced to $5.99 and I put it in the ground and it immediately went into transplant shock - gave it some palm fertilizer and water and within two months it rebounded - just give it a little TLC and you'll be surprised. Also, this is the time of year that when transplanting you really need to be aware of water needs - but palms also love hot weather and will put down their roots pretty quickly this time of year.... don't fret :-)
