I'm looking to have some privacy in the back yard as I am a one story surrounded by two story houses.  I want some trees that provide that "privacy screen/hedge" if you know what I mean..... does anyone know how fast sissoo trees grow?  Any one planted them in the last couple of years who can comment on their maintenance/upkeep or growth rates?

Sissoo trees do grow fast but they are semi deciduous. I think that's spelled correctly. But either way, they will lose leaves in the winter...........maybe not all but they will not stay full year round........it depends on the harshness of the winter.

Go to Leaf Feather and Farm. They will advise you and have AWESOME trees.

I've noticed that sissoo's in Phoenix and other "in town" locations do much better in winter in terms of retaining their leaves etc.... compared to sissoo's down here in Maricopa!

My neighbor suggested brazillian pepper - his is beautiful multi-trunk and stays deep dark green all year round, but I am hesitant because of the pepper pods that form and fall to the ground and my dog is the curious type.....

My sissoo trees don't really lose leaves unless it's a really hard winter. We put a new one in last fall that was still small enough to cover during the freeze and it never lost it's leaves. Well, maybe a few. We love these trees because they don't really need a lot of water, but if you want them to grow quickly just water the heck out of them and watch them grow! They are also almost impossible to kill. We had a baby sissoo two winters ago that my dogs attacked while it was covered for a freeze. The goofballs must have thougt it was a ghost! Anyway, it was literally broken all the way to the ground. We left a little nub in the ground and continued to water it. It is probably back up to five feet now. Guess I should also mention we got our trees from Leaf and Feather Farm. They'll probably give you other suggestions as well. Love that place!

The Brazillian Pepper Tree is a very fast growing beautiful tree.  My sister has one,  Her dog could care less about the drppings from the tree.  However, the teeny tiny flowers that it produces is very very messy.  She literally could sweep her porch twice a day.  If you have a pool or spa or hot tub, this is not the tree for you!

Once the lower growth is trimmed they rarely need to be trimmed up again..the canopy is full and maintains its natural shape nicely..in the winter they do lose most of their leaves however, rebound quickly in the Spring..

I have come across quite a few Sissoo trees that trunks were damaged due to the winter...however, even with the trunk dead new growth will appear at the bottom and if caught quickly enough a new main lead can be trained to take over...

If you do go to Leaf and Feather..the guys will tell you to buy the 15 gal. it's much more affordable and once planted it will become the size of a 30 gal in a few weeks..

Happy planting!
