In my home town, every Memorial Day, July 4th and Labor Day citizens would put out at the end of their driveway an american flag (most would put one on each side of their driveway).  One by one, this fad caught on and within a couple of years the entire town was involved.  Our main street had large flags hanging for everyone going through town to see.  It was reallyy a grand site!..This memory was sparked by Mr. Bartle's remarks in his opinion page on what Memorial Day really represnted.  Wouldn't it be grand if  Maricopa could remember our loved ones who fought for our freedom by showing our thanks and respect to them by spending a dollar at Walmart for a flag and putting it at the end of our driveways.   Come on Maricopa, July 4th is right around the corner!  Let's see how many flags we can wave!!!  Be patriotic!

Is that how much an American flag made in China costs now? $1.00? And I think I'd rather put a flag up on Veterans Day than Labor Day. Which Vets are we thanking on Labor Day?

Don't mind Alan, he is just kidding again.

*shakes head*

Boy, did you miss the whole point of this discussion!  My point was to get the community involved.  And the statement about the flags coming from Walmart....that was just a suggestion, you can get them wherever you want!

And I apologize for leaving out Vet's Day.  Yes that was also included.

You took all the fun out of an idea of gathering the community to thank our soldiers for our freedom.....I read this forum and I wanted to make a constructive suggestion for once, not the usual back and forth crap that usually is read.

For anyone interested, the Boy Scouts put flags out for people on these holidays as a fundraiser. Contact a boy scout in your neighborhood for info

Why do we need holiday's or special event days to fly the flag?  Why aren't they flown everyday to show your pride?  It's sad when it takes a terrible event like 9/11 or holiday to prompt people to show their pride in their country.  But will say that during 9/11 it was great to see the flags flying everywhere.

Our's is out everyday and only comes down when it needs to be replaced or when the wind is blowing too hard.

In my hometown every 4th of July we would buy tons of fireworks and shoot them off. We need to bring this tradition to Arizona.

There's a reason that Arizona doesn't do this Caveman, they're called wildfires. Arizona is a dry climate, in case you haven't noticed, it'd be pretty stupid to allow fireworks in this state like that.

Well, so much for patriotism.  In my neighborhood, my house is the only house that displayed the flag ...and we will do so again on July 4th and Vet's day.  I personally would display it every day (if my HOA would allow), as I am proud of this country and the men and women who have given and continue to give so much for the freedoms that we all (legals, illegals, transits, whatever you happen to be on the "lving in America" spectrum)  enjoy.

GO NAVY!!!

Your HOA can not prevent you from flying/displaying a flag. They can only try and tell you how to display it.

Thanks for the info Alanf.  The first year we lived here, we left the flag out and got a letter saying we could display only for xxx number of days.  So they were wrong.

For those of you that say you are displaying your flag everyday, are you doing it properly? Honestly thats why we dont leave our flag out. There is a proper way to do it and its a lot of work.

You are suppose to raise your flag at dawn and take it down at dusk UNLESS you have a light on it. And that light has to directly on the flag and it should not share a light with another object.

Does that only apply to American Flags or can I fly any flag?
