I've experienced the same thing a few times, but it usually doesn't last long.  I received a notice with my bill yesterday declaring "8 megs in May, 08" so possibly the sluggishness was cause by their tinkering with the system.

I'm having problems again.  Today I don't have enough speed to play a Windows media file without a number of pauses.  I've run speed tests a number of times today and the best was 723 kbps download and 820 kbps upload!  The other tests yielded similar results.  It's the first time I've seen the upload speed consistently faster than the download speed.

I notice that every weekend mine gets so slow I can't get some web pages to load. I have been told by Orbitel that everything is good and it is not there problem it is my computer. Well I have a pretty new Dell Laptop for work and it is just as fast as my desktop that is 3 yrs old, when it comes to the net. So I don't beleive it is my system. Also I have tested my system and got back 700's for both up and download. Anyone have a suggestion?

An Orbitel Tech is coming out Thursday.  I had the same problem last September and the Tech found a bad connection in the cable box across the street, even though their online testing indicated that wasn't the problem. I had between 5 & 6 Megs on every test after the repair, a huge difference!  I'll keep you posted.

It is amazing that google is such a house hold name. I think back about getting AOL (back in the dial up days) and how at first no one knew what that was and now who doesn't. I am getting a better connection tonight but we shall see what the future holds..... *Laugh*

If you're connection is sluggish try this

Powerdown PC / Powerdown Router / Reset Cable Modem / Wait for Solid Green Cable Light /

Powerup Router / Powerup PC

· Power OFF the PC/Mac.

· Power OFF the Router, if there is one.

· Unplug power to the modem and wait 2 minutes before plugging back in.

· Wait for a solid Green Cable light on the Cable Modem to come on.

If the Cable light never comes ON steady, this indicates a bad Cable Modem, signal strength problem or, WOW network problem

· Power ON the Router.

· Power ON the PC/Mac.

· Is the PC light flashing on the Cable Modem? (Indicating data transfer.)

· Open IE and try to surf. Does it work now?

· If it does not work, Disconnect the Router from the Cable Modem.

· Connect one PC/Mac directly to the Cable Modem and see if you get a connection.

If it is still slow call orbitel and they can check the modem signal online. If the signal to noise ratio or Power level is low it may mean there is a problem with the modem or with the wiring.

A good website to check you speed is http://www.speakeasy.net/speedtest/ You can choose different servers throughout the country. Your download speed should be between 6,000-8,000 kbps and 500-800 kbps for upload. Speeds may be a bit slower if you choose the test servers on the east coast.

Thanks for the info. I called them and they looked and said it "appears to be fine" yet when I tested it I found it was running at 1/2 what it should be... but then this morning it was fine. Who knows... Thanks for the sites again.

I'm now up to about 3 megs downoad and about 700 kbps upload.  The technician said he replaced some fittings and a spitter in the cable box across the street.  He said there were some other issues preventing my achieving higher speeds and that they would continue to seek those out, but that there was nothing more he could do on my end at present.

Do you know who your tech was so I can ask for that person?

It looks like David Service on the work order.  I know his first name is David, but not sure of the last name.  Knowledgeable and very likable.
