I was in that area today. Still looks like they're playing around in the dirt.

That's Ioanna Morfessis out there with her Tonka truck to entice other businesses to come in.

I wouldn't buy into that rumor.  They're still completing work at Porter and Maricopa-Casa Grande Highway as they've been for the past year, as far as passersby can tell.

That one isn't suppose to break ground till Maricopa has closer to 100K residents.  So that might be awhile yet.

Ok, I'm sorry, you're right. Morfessis doesn't play with Tonka trucks. She only goes around collecting a consultation fee from the City of Maricopa without producing any results. Kind of like what Billingsley is going to do in his new role.

Has anyone heard anything more about when our Walmart is coming to town?

On 2/26, I heard that Walmart is still a go. I believe the source to be reliable.

My answer is "NO" to Q#5 and Q#1.

Rumors, rumors..... it's coming, it's been pushed back, looks like they are still doing the initial renovation, looks like everything is at a standstill.  Who is the person in city government who has the answer?  There must be someone to contact who knows what is actually going on.  Anyone know who that might be?

I posted on my site a month or so ago that I had called Walmart Corporate in Bentonville Arkansas and talked with Josh Rogers of Walmart Real Estate for our area. He said they are still coming but Walmart has 250 stores in development and they will be completed in an order that benefits Walmart. We are scheduled to be completed in 2009 but Mr Rogers said it may be into 2010 before completion because they closely watch things like population and growth potential. It is their bottom line they are interested in. Our city manager said that Walmart asked to speed up the process, but Walmart didnt say that. I asked the city why they cant update us on Walmart periodically and they said because of privacy laws.

BTW Godsey, did you contact Home Depot on their plans for "The Wells" development? How about Phoenix Commerical Advisors, who are the realtors on the development deal?

I like how the city is quick to release a statement that they roped in a certain business to the city, but won't keep you apprised of the status of the development.

The next time a city rep states that they cannot provide an answer due to "privacy laws", have them quote the law that they are referring to. Is is state statute, federal, City Code? Anytime anyone tells you it is because of the law, ask them what law they are referring to. I have usually found that is just an answer they have, but they do not know what the law is, and when I research further, I usually find there is no law in the instance being discussed.

I understand if there is negotations on land, etc., going on, but once WalMart places stores on their calendar, it is not necessarily a provate matter anymore. So again, ask what law, code or statute the responder is refering to. If they do not know, have them research it and get back to you, and/or the remainder of the public.

This City has proven time and time again they do not want to run their operations in a public forum, so the more we can question their responses, the more we may see there is no legitimate reason for hiding behind these privacy shields, except maybe to protect a council member who is getting rich off of a deal.

You are absolutely right gilbertglcn! On the topic of operating in secret: I was just laughing at the post in another thread by Mr Smith on the firings. The amendment to city code 3-1-1 that he refers to doesnt even talk about the positions that were let go. (June 20, 2006 WS Meeting) http://www.cityofmaricopa.net/archive/assets2006/WorkSessionMinutes06-20-06.doc. In fact, the intention, according to the minutes was for these positions to "report" to the city manager but STILL be appointed by the council.

Another interesting part of the city code is Section 3-2-1 Subsection H - 2, City Manager Duties:

"All department heads shall be appointed (by the city manager) subject to ratification by the council". It doesnt mention firing them, but if radification is required by the council to hire them then it should also be required to fire them and therefore be a public process. Mr Smith is quoting a code that does not apply to the Fire Chief or Planning Director, but this one sure does. Either way. the appointment or removal of any and all department heads should always require council approval and we need to vote to change this code to reflect this.

N75194: Sorry, I have not heard anything with the Home Depot but I will dig and see what I can find out. It took me about a week to get Walmart Corporate to return my calls.

Denna complains about Big Cow and the smell but the more I read posts from Godsey, I think it's him. I'm just one vote, but you have failed to get my nod next week. I love how you lay low in the bushes and then when something pops, you decide to speak up. Being an armchair quarterback is not how you lead. It's not what this town wants from it's mayor. Updating your website twice in a one week time frame, just days away from the primary election is not how you win people over. Walmart is not the biggest issue this city has. And for those crying about state law, a confidentially agreement is a legal and binding document. If one was signed, that's it.
