We have a small area in our backyard that we seeded with the Rye(?) winter grass last year.  We have been wanting to plant the Bermuda grass this year but have not gotten to it yet.  Does anyone know if it is to late to plant the seed and/or we were maybe thinking of using sod, is it to late?

i think you could plants sod or seed but with these daytime temps i think it might be iffy if it germinates or not. i think optimal temp wise is 80-90 degrees, so late march through april is the best time to plant seed or sod imo.

I seeded Bermuda in early may. the parts of my lawn that get full sun are growing green and thick. the sections that get shaded in the afternoon are still sprouting to this day.

I'm no pro, this is my first attempt at grass in the desert. I put down a lot of seed, fertilizer and water 2 times daily until the ground is very wet. I have above ground sprinklers, 2 to a hose line, 6 sprinklers total. I leave each hose line on for 20 minutes at each watering.

I think the dead rye grass being in place would be helpful for you to shade the seedlings from the summer sun.

Give it a whirl, the most you'll spend is about $30 on seed, so it won't be a big loss if it doesn't work.

You need hybrid bermuda sod for the summer. It does not come in seed form only sod. The grass only grows in full sun and beleive it or not, hot temps 90 and above. You can plant it now. Some types of hybrid bermuda are Tiff-Way, EZ-Turf, Bob Sod and Tiffway.

New sod needs to be watered about 4-5 times a day for about 5-10 minutes for the first 2 weeks. Then 1 time daily for about 15 to 20 minutes for the 3rd week. After the 3rd week you can start watering 2-3 times per week (sometimes more when temps are 110 or above). Water should penetrate 8-10 inches beneath the ground.

In the fall when temps drop, the bermuda will start turning brown and then you can seed with rye (cool season grass).

Check out www.westernsod.com for more info or call any of the local landscapers.

3 weeks ago from today we just installed 1500 sq ft of Tiffway sod from a company call Evergreenturf. They are located in Chandler, but they deliver to Maricopa for free!!! Their instructions were to till and roll the ground, and we didn't do either. Also, they said to water 4 times a day for at least 10 minutes each. Well, we did not have the funds to do an elaborate sprinkler system. so we ended up just watering really well in the morning with normal type sprinklers, and then really well when we got home, and then just spot checked it before bedtime. It has taken really well and we are just watering it once a day this week, and then cut back starting next week. I am very pleased with their sod. You can go to their website at evergreenturf.com if you need information. Very pleased with their sod, and the price was cheaper than Home Depot AND they deliver for free...can't beat that!

I had Premiere Turf out here to install artificial grass and its amazing.  No watering and no weeding at all.  It looks as good as real grass without the headache and upkeep.

Watering correctly the first few weeks is very important because it grows and strengthens the roots.  If the roots aren't deep enough, the grass may start to brown once you start watering on the every 2-3 day cycle.  Also don't forget to fertilize every 4-6 weeks.  It really does make a difference.
